i've just bought a 200tdi and was wondering if anyone can tell me where abouts the temp gauge should go up to when on a long run cos i went out on a run last night and it got upto 3/4 and this morning when i checked the water level it was down by about 1-2oz,i went out today and when the temp went just over half way i switched on the electric fan and it seemed to stay at the 1/2 way mark, could this be a radiator problem as there is no obvious signs of a leak from the hoses.there is also the normal fan which is on all the time.

any hints or tips much appreciated.

discos can usually run fine with no fan at all and some people take off the fan and just keep it in the boot.My temp gauge never goes above half but i should think that as long as it stays below 3/4 then it should be fine.It sounds like you could have a partial blockage or the stat is faulty but in any of these cases you need to get it sorted before you blow the h/gasket.

Have a look at the back (engine bay side) of the radiator .. if any fins are blown off then you get reduced cooling. You might have to take cowling off but it's pretty important that the fins are there, and allow a clear flow of air.

As said, they can run all day normally without the fan, but if the rad isn't working properly 'cos it's lost some fins then nothing much will help other than keeping speed down! ;)
