Having just finished a 12 month rebuild of my 90, I took it to the MOT and everything seemed fine. Now just waiting to get a VIC appointment and I'm having trouble getting the engine to start. I have to crank the engine for a good 30 seconds to a minute to get it to fire up by which time a second battery is needed to carry on cranking. Before the MOT the car started first time but since the run it had, it refuses to start properly. Once its started, the car will restart again first time so I'm almost 100% its a fuel issue, maybe lift pump?

Was thinking exactly the same about the air leak, nothing was changed after the MOT so not sure why it is suddenly happening. It is parked backwards on a hill so would parking it the other way round solve the problem temporarily?

ah right. i've seen a few recently put the fuel pipes on backwards, check that.

but first port for leaks is the leak off pipes. go pull em off and check for splits.

but yeah, try parking the other way.

I've found in the past that even the smallest leak at the leak off pipe unions can make starting very difficult with a 200 tdi. Once running all OK, but turns for ages starting from cold.

Would rubber vacuum hose be ok to use as a temporary fix? It seems to be the only suitable hose I can get locally and may have the VIC early next week

fuel pipe is a better fit and maybe cheaper. but sure, use what you can get a hold off. but bear in mind it could disintegrate rapidly :)

You want 3.2mm inside diameter rubber hose, not 4mm as its to sloppy
Any local motor factors will keep it on the shelf

Mine does exactly the same. every morning, once started will start all day no bother, just first time on a morning. checked all pipes and cant find any leaks anywhere.

A couple of weeks ago after it had been stood for a couple of days without starting, before I turned the key I opened the bonnet and primed the lift pump untill diesel started running out from the nut on top of the pump, only took a few pumps on the lever, tightned the nut back up and it started first turn of the key, I must get myself a new lift pump soon.

but you just showed your pump works and it was leak back.

Please forgive me if my post was stupid. still learning
So Is the pump not the problem on mine??

doesn't sound like it :)

sounds like the same issue as the op, you turn off the engine and you have a slight air leak in the fuelling system.

this allows air in and so the fuel is able to move down the pipes back to the tank.

as it is a mechanical pump, when you go to start it, it needs to turn the engine over a few times to make the pump work. this pumps fuel back up the lines purging the air out.

after a few cranks and the air is all gone (which can be a bit of a bugger as it compresses in the injectors) it can start.

so same as the op, go check the leak offs first, then fuel filter (crap makes can do it), then check pipe unions and the state of the pipes.

Used fish tank pipe on mine as a temp measure, was on for months before I eventually bought some pipe, never a problem though :)

Took the leak off pipes tonight and they are made of plastic which doesn't look original and the joints seem quite loose so I'll get to halfords tomorrow and get a kit to sort it and hopefully it'll be fixed
