I started my landrover the other morning and proceded to de-ice it, whilst it was ticking over I noticed the engine note change, and a ticking noise start, I gently reved it and the ticking got louder, so I turned off the engine and checked the oil level which was just below max. So I then started the engine again and had a listen to it from under the bonnet, the noise sounds like the top end (valve clearence) type rattle. So today I checked the valve clearences which were all big by almost 1mm! after reseting the clearences I took it for a drive, the noise was alot quiter but as I was coming back down the street it got louder. I am now wondering if my cam is shot? or maybe the tappets? I am going to strip it down and pull the head off it once the weather picks up a little.

Sounds like cam followers are breaking up ( 40 , 41 )

only way to tell is to rip her apart :) .

If you havent done one before get a manual .....

cheers for that Sypher, I was thinkin along those lines myself, weather permitting i'll be delving into it tomorrow:eek: Is there any chance of it doing more damage? have you had this problem?

it might, just might, be worth rechecking the tappet clearances before starting to strip the lump.

its possible (ok, not likely I know) that you failed to fully tighten a locker after adjusting, that would very soon give the symptoms you describe, ie better then rapidly getting noisy again.

eggs, granny, sucking. :D;)

checked and adjusted them all today, NON of the locknuts on the rockers were loose. If I can't sort it tomorrow then I know that 5lts of unleaded and a match will. :D

Just a thought.... any chance your fuel could be contaminated? Could anyone have put unleaded petrol in? Worth sniffing your tank before stripping the engine.

Well you might have a fractured tappet slide too if you where running with big gaps ... but do take off the rocker cover and check to see if all your valve / rocker caps are still there ( little discs that sit on the top of the valves and acts as a wear pad ) might of snapped in two with all that hammering ??? .. ( hense why your noise has come back ) .

The case hardening does come off the rollers and you might have a flat spot in it/them , as youve adjusted the tappets up ( on a good face ) they may of rotated around and back into the flatspot ( noise returns ) .

If / when you take the head off and check the followers .

FFS DONT remove the tappet slide ( held in place with a bolt on the outside of the block ) before FIRST removing the follower and the roller ............

( They WILL drop out and into your motor and can be a right BAS*ARD to fish out ) .

Get a screw driver on the top of all the injectors and see if it is a noisy injector.

It could also be caused by poorly seating valves.

took it apart the other day, took head off and checked followers and cam lobes, everything was fine, then I took the rocker assembly out, nothing was bent, so I pulled out the push-rods and found one bent and the valve cap on the same push-rod was squashed! I think this had happened after I drowned the engine a few months ago  I snapped the timing belt and bent 4 push-rods last time and did'nt think to check the valve caps! lesson learn't. I'm just waiting for Merlin Landrover getting the caps in today and then it'll be back on the road. (hopefully)

The saga continues! got the motor all back together and started it up, the engine turned over for a while and then fired into life, after about 20 secs it started to get a bit tappety so I switched it off and scratched my head for 10 mins. I then thought of how it struggled to fire into life when it usually fires first flick of the key and suspected a timing issue, so I then set about removing the timing belt cover and was quite supprised at what I found, the timing belt tensioner bolt had snapped! :mad:GRRR! anyone got a match! well I've got it all back together again now and it's running lovely, the pump timing may need slight adjustment as it seems as though the throttle pick-up is a bit slow, so I may need to advance the pump timing? I'm frozen cold but at least the f#@ker is running now.

You where lucky then could of bent even more valves if you reved here up and the belt jumped ... at let shes running again and just needs tweeking :)
