Guys can 200TDI's realistically do big mileages?

Say for example you were looking at a 110 with 178,000 miles on it. Not something that was an out and out work truck - more something that has been reasonally well looked after ie - when something needed done - it was done and used mostly on road but maybe did some offroading in its lifetime.
 
Yep they are one seriously tough engine, couple of minor weak spots is the head gasket can blow on number 4 easy to do as cam in block and they sometimes eat their valve lash caps which is a cheap and simple fix.
Only real major fail is cam bearings wear and cause low oil pressure defo not a cheap job!
If oil light goes out quick its most likely a good un.
Some time back when I had my dash out I noticed the speedo head had been opened at some point and thats was with 129k on the clock so havent a clue how many miles its done:eek:
Few stories about of people reaching 300/400k.
 
mines is sitting at 190000, never managed to fix the smoke problem but still goes no problem lol, hopefully it wont fail on emissions
 
Mines on 168K and runs sweet. Hasn't used an oil/water in the 3months I've had it which surprised me!
 
Mines a baby at only 78k and all seems good (touching lots of wood!)

It isn't the engines that are weak tbh. It's the transmissions.

Listen for clonking, and a delay taking up drive, it's common for the gearbox splines to wear as they aren't lubricated on early Defenders.
 
There's been a local 200 which had done 450 and when they took apart the engine after the owner had buggered it trying to fix it himself, they found virtually no wear!! If looked after who knows. I got a 200tdi with 83 000 on which i hope to get it up to 500 000!!
 
Right - the guys seems very open honest and friendly.

Says at one time it was heating up bit too much for his liking so changed waterpump and head gasket.

Dripping bit of oil - crank gasket replaced but seems to be from near oil sensor?

Anyway - bought it - will share info and pic tomorrow...have to help friend with Series 3 purchase now!!!
 
Oil switches always leak, doddle to change
If it was running warm which is a very unusual problem for a 200 I would replace the stat asap and check the fins on the rad, but my money is on the stat, dont buy a cheap stat you will regret it and make sure its a proper 200tdi one with the extra bit on the bottom to shut of the bypass system, make sure its an 88 degc one otherwise you will freeze in the winter!

Well went ahead and bought it.

spotlights on spotlight bar (need wired in as all cut)

High Lift Jack
Heavy tow chain
Bull bar
Chassis is very very good - few dings at rear crossmember (solid). Looks like needs an outrigger as its had some patching to it already but shone a light through other parts and the inside looks really really good. I can only spot 1 other small repair patch.
Body has few dings but actually very good and on original paintwork.
Bulkhead is really solid.
Passenger door could use replacing along with 2 seats but its pretty good thing all over.
front bumper and bullbar are welded together on front - good and solid but bumper is bit scrappy.
Handbrake isnt working - think its either the cable or the shoes.

Also bought up with it Discovery 200TDI, Engine, Gearbox & Transferbox.

Tipping frame, ram, hydraulic box, Land rover PTO Hydraulic Pump + all the fittings to put it to tipper. Previous owner had it as a tipper for his allotment/field out front. He made compost and used the Landy to save having to cart the stuff up the field in trailer and then shoveling it out. But then put it back to normal as it became the daily runner.

Loads of parts and spares - boxes of stuff.

Engine had headgasket and all cooling system replaced. It had been heating up bit much - not overheating - but he worked his way through everything before realising it was Head Gasket starting to go at the back.

Engine starts on the button, drives smoothly, Hi Lo and Diff all working well. Big tyres seem to slow it down but had the big trailer on it this morning and seems to pull well.

Tax and test are up next month but I didnt mind as I bought it to prep for some work that was coming my way that would require it.

It seems a nice Land Rover - rough diamond s to speak - sort of thing that has been looked after but used for its purpose not polished in the driveway or kept for the heck of it.

Best of all - I was just out shopping for some bits for it yesterday. Get home last night to a voicemail telling me the job I bought it for is cancelled!!!

Absolutely gutted! Was really looking forward to getting stuck into this. Already had tidying work and full respray lined up - had it all visualized in my head!

Still sounds good mate!!

My 200tdi disco engine had 204k on the clock when i took the out the disco and put it in my 90. It pulls well, smokes a lot tho but i think pump has been turned up by the tit who owned it before.

Current tit tried, turned the t25 out two turns, fuel pin I changed last night but that had been turned around as I could see it has two scores on the pin. And the star wheel I turned out a fair few clicks incase. Would be nice to have a look to see if I can find how to set the pump to standard but I'm just a tit ;)
 
The main causes of black smoke will be either the diaphragm or the max fuel screw 13mm locknut and 6mm head, dont adjust the idle screw which has a slot in the head.
 
I've been playing with the t25 and 13mm lock screw, the pin has been changed for a boost pin and the star wheel has been would back a few clicks. Ive ordered a egt gauge so I'll get that plumbed in when it comes.
 
The t25 doesnt do that much, just gives you a little more fuel off boost, I found with mine it caused smoke at idle

I spied a rough looking Disco 1 200tdi in a car park here one day...hence why I peeped inside it....there was 930,000kms on the speedo...
