will it fit a 19J?

I believe part of my starting problem relates to the injection pump, as i have a spare 200TDi Defender one sat here, i'm thinking of swapping them.

Any ideas folks? Tried google but stick 200Tdi & 19J together in a search and you get everything but the answer...

As i thought, no answer as it's a tricky question.

Next question ( and this may sound daft ) but if i disconnect the fuel pipes from the injectors and crank it over, is the fuel supposed to dribble out? I would've expected a decent amount of pressure from these pipes going into the injectors...

depending on the fuel filter type it may be possible to fill with fresh diesel-prime it an then start and burn off excess cooking oil.

As part of the ol' veg oil problem, i spent today sorting it as much as possible.

Drained the fuel tank as much as i could ( got 50 odd litres out ), changed the fuel filter ( filled with fresh diesel ) drained the lines, took the fuel feed pipe from the tank and stuck it in the jerry can full of fresh diesel.

Primed the system, cranked her over a few times ( with drain off line off to purge any oil through ) reconnected it all, cranked again, primed again.

At this point i've pretty much removed all traces of oil in the system, yes they'res going to be a bit here n there, but the majority is out now.

Anyway she wouldn't fire at all, so i removed the hard lines to the injectors and cranked again...fuel was dribbling out the ends, so the question is, is it supposed to do that or should it be under pressure which i think it should.

If so, my pumps fooked and i'm stuck :(

As Sean says,pumps are different.

You should get a small squirt of fuel if you slack off the injector union. It wont usually go all over the place, although the pressure is high the volume is small.

You coul use petrol to clean your pump,I have seen Discomania explain it on here if you search,I have known this to work before.

Do remember that indirect injection can be hellers to start in very cold weather!

No squirt, just a wee drop off the end of the union. It wanted to fire this morning, but alas battery went dead before it could. As for cold i don't have an issue in the garage, it's at room temp due to the heaters on the go in there 24hours a day, but this issue has arose with the veg oil introduced and although i've had it running since adding it, they haven't been long runs.
It keeps pointing to the pump imho, it could be that it needs a clean,i'll have a search for the thread from Discomania, but whatever the outcome of running or not i'm losing my trust in the pump, it was inevitable it would happen eventually with running veg oil in these CAV pumps, just not the right time financially ;)

The price of a new pump outweighs the benefit, i have a 200TDi lump that the money could be spent on to get it nearly ready for the transfer ( rebuild including new OS pistons )

Cheers

yer pump will be fine - just charge the battery and keep it turning over till it fires - don't be pumping the pedal while it's turning over

that 200 is going to cost you a small fortune to rebuild - rebore, OS pistons, rings, shells etc - bin it or keep it for spares and buy a good running one if your wanting to do the swap

I was hoping you were right Sean, but after full charges she's not firing again, i currently got her started with a bump and she's sat in the garage running, i don't wanna turn her off atm.

Cost of the 200 is apprx £600 to get it sorted and ready, steep but might just be worth it.

The injection pump relies on pressurised diesel in the injection lines, it's the shock along the lines from the piston in the IP and a small quantity of metered diesel that goes up the line and opens the injector, it does look rather lame when your just running it into open air.

If you undo the union just a little and turn it over, you will get a hiss as diesel is forced out the loose union, thats a better test to see if it's getting diesel up to the injectors.

Are you getting white smoke out the exhaust after attempting to start it?

yup white then black and continues to be usual smokey colour whilst running ( sort of black/grey colour )

I have an audio file somewhere i just took as the engine is becoming progressively noisier and missing ever so slightly on tick over. Also i've just noticed a sound which i can only describe as ball bearings hitting each other about every 4-5 seconds, but can't actually locate the source at present.

I'm curious, i wonder if it's the timing that could be out causing it to be a bugger to start and also the running noisy at all?

The timing case has had an oil leak, so either cam or crank seal has worn in the past, if the belt is beginning to deterioate then this would cause starting and running issues, even missing on tick over...

thoughts?

The timing will never go out unless it is disturbed or something breaks:)

Best to ask these things though :D

When engine's warm it's fine to start, no issues at all ( now it's running ) but from a cold engine it's a right pain.

Looking at cheaper TDi options atm, a few have risen around the £300 - £400 mark, against the project one of £600 to replace the parts needed for the one i have in bits, that'll keep till next year at least.

You engine will start better when the weather warms up,Paul.Used to be even worse years ago used to be a lot more fuel waxing.

Clean the pump, new filter, itll keep ya going for ages while you build the other. Once theyre going they usually run all day!

Have you had a look at the prices for complete (but rotten) Discos? For well under £500 you get the complete vehicle, use everything you need from under the bonnet, then flog the rest of the useful bits. You may well end up getting the engine for close to nowt!
