So... I have a 90, originally a td but converted to a disco 200tdi (not my doing)
Background -
I’ve just replaced the water pump and stat (yes I checked it first) I’ve flushed the whole coolant system and as far as I know, a standard rad is fitted (with a manually operated electric fan)

My question - how do I know if I have the right sender and/or temp garage?

There’s lots of threads on the matter but none that explain how you KNOW what is actually fitted.

My issue is, in this super cold weather, my temp gauage in slow moving traffic, at faster speeds, or when giving it some wellie (if that’s even possible in a landy) seems to sit between half and 3 quarters almost into the red. Although, I’ve never had it ‘overheat’ and never any steam or funny smells.
I’m just worried that if it was to genuinely overheat, I may not ever know until it’s too late! As my gauge doesn’t give any sort of reading that makes much sense!

Thanks for reading and drop a comment If you may be able to shed some light on the matter for me

James

It's fair to assume the guage is original so replace whatever sender you have for one that you know matches it.

I'm not sure but I think you need an adaptor to fit a 19j sender to a TDI.

A search should tell you

IIRC, the senders are identified by the colour of the insulating ring - so you need to know which ring colour for which gauge....

If you want originality, then I think BB is right - 200Tdi sensor is metric, 19J is imperial (1/8 bsp (?)..)

Durite gauges are excellent - and unless you really want it original, then fit one and then you will KNOW what it is up to ;)

Another vote for the Durite. In the meantime, when the existing gauge is reading hot, stop and open the bonnet - put your hand on the top hose. It should be hot, but not so hot you can't hold your hand on it for a few seconds. Once an engine gets really hot, you can usually smell the oil/dirt cooking on it.

Just bin off the original sender and gauge and fit a durite capillary water temp gauge so that you actually know what’s going on.

I was actually looking at these, as oppose to trying to make the existing gauge work. That way I know gauge and sender are designed as one.
Thanks for your reply

Thank you, I will take a look to see what’s fitted, but will probably go for the durite system.

Thanks mate! Think durite is going to be my way toward

You mean burning oil smells in landy arnt normal?! Haha, I joke, no burning smells here thankfully! Just fitted a new heater box and matrix last night so a second system coolant flush and new coolant in two weeks, the old girl must love me!

Are you running at that temerature with the electric fan permanently turned on.

No mate, I only switch the fan on if I’m sitting in traffic or moving a slow speeds. But I was switching it on based on what the gauge was saying, which is more than likely wrong anyway!
Off to brownchurch to get the correct sender for now until I get myself a durite sender and gauge (unless my new sender cures the issues)

I have a 110 gauge & 200disco tdi but have a resistor in line. This reads 1/2 when correct temp. If it gets to 3/4 fans come on but not needed for long.
When the snows gone will see the sensor & resistor if you want.

Hello...first post, and have exactly the same issue as James. Bought a 90 2 months ago, told it was a 2.5td, turns out it’s had a heart transplant for a 200tdi. Same sender issue...reading hot but not hot. How easy is it to replace the sender and gauge together? Do I need to worry about losing fluid, air locks, any other gremlins for a complete nubby! Ta in advance.

You will lose a bit of fluid as sender is at top.should not get any airlocks.
Easy job for a new owner. Just don't cross thread the sender

Thanks, I’ll give it a go. Durite sounds like the way to go, will have to figure out which sender for the 200tdi. Assuming best to buy as a pair? Ta

Might be worth fitting a viscous fan as well. Or at least a temperature control switch for electric fan.

Well (of the top of my head) there is something fitted to the top of the engine, near the thermostat and has two pins coming from the top of it, thinking maybe this was the original temp sensor of some description? Maybe...

Welcome to the world of landy a lol.
Hope you sort your issue out mate. Once I’ve done mine (changing the sender but keeping the gauge) il try and remember to drop you a message and let you know how it went and if it worked. Might save you the cost of buying the whole lot

Thanks for the part number SteveSw, one more basic question...how do I identify if I have a 200tdi defender or disco engine under the bonnet???

The engine number begins with 11L on a defender engine. If its a 12L (like mine) or 13L then it's a disco engine. Another sign is modified engine mounts
