Hi guys, could anyone be kind enough to shed some light on my handbrake situation?

It's never worked as I think the cable is too long. I recentlymade the mistake of buying a new cable that goes into the drum rather than to the linkage outside it. My question is, I have a 200tdi disco engine in my defender with the lt77box and lt230 transfer, would any defender linkage cable fit?

Thanks in advance!

It should do but the quality of the cables vary and I have had new cables which have already been at the limit of their adjustment once fitted.

Are the handbrake shoes correctly adjusted so minimal movement of the cable is needed to apply them?

If the shoes are adjusted correctly and it has never worked it may be worth removing the drum to inspect and rebuild/replace both the expander and the adjuster. They work using a central cone (connected to the linkage), a pair of rollers and then angled pistons. If a roller is missing or the piston is nor put in the correct way around you will not get any movement when the central cone is moved by the cable. I would start by removing it, cleaning it, and checking it is assembled correctly with the pistons moving when you move the rod, although from memory the parts are cheap enough you could just replace them. It should not take much movement of the rod to engage the shoes if properly adjusted.
