200tdi disco engine, oil in pipe towards the turbo gauge...

So as the title says, Ive found oil in the pipe all the way from the t piece where i teed off from near the fuel pump. so I can only imagine that there is going to be oil in the top of my diaphragm.

I noticed she's boosting at 0.5 bar instead of around 0.8 the other night and she felt down on power but seemed to smoke less that usual (still smokes a lot as i also have a boost pin in)

So i thought the pipe to the back of my turbo gauge had come loose and was loosing boost that way = less pressure on the diaphragm = less diesel = less unburnt diesel meaning less black smoke, however when ive gone to check the back of the gauge ive been met with a line of oil..


Im guessing turbo seals?.. She's blowing through the crank breather already I think the piston rings are ready for changing as the engine is over 200k and i dont know the history of it.. Luckily I have a spare engine coming soon which needs a new piston putting in and i plan on rebuilding that but I wanted this engine to last out to see some snow!!!!!


I haven't checked anything else like intercooler for oil so where else do i need to check to find out whats wrong and where?

you must be passing oil if its breathing heavy that will be one source as is the turbo itself ,remove hose from turbo to intercooler ,run engine and see what passes out of turbo then the same with breather pipe disconnected from inlet hose
 
the breather pipe isn't connected to anything, just sits down near the washer bottle breathing out into the engine bay, she's breathing quite heavy. thought it was steam to begin with but after putting the original head back on after having it pressure tested the water loss stopped but the breathing continued.

I wil try the suggested things this week/end james thank you.

How hard is it to replace turbo seals? I know i can get a second hand turbo with unknown condition for about 80 quid.
 
Defender 200 turbos seriously expensive even second hand, disco ones peanuts.
How long has the breather been routed to atmosphere? if recently the oil in the pipework could be old residual stuff.
You can buy new turbo cartridges off of ebay for about 120quid, obviously at that price far east made, but to be fair what isnt!
 
luckily its a disco lump and so is the spare that i have coming. Mate who sold me the other engine said i can have the turbo with it, so with a little luck the garage swapping his engine out wont take that off and keep it, should only need an alternator for it and thats two separate engines....

The crank breather has been routed more or less down into the passenger headlight area for 3 years, even on the old 19j that was in there 2 years ago.

I dont recall the engine breathing at all before i did the head gasket and left the head off for a few weeks but thats another story, I swapped the head and the head gasket so many times before getting that right, anyone who followed a previous post would have seen the knackers of a job that became.

The oil into the pipework has got to be newish and coincides with lack of power. Im not worried, its just a toy and swapping the engine is a day job lol.
 
Forgot to mention,

When the truck was worked off road and really up to a nice warm temp coming out of the blowers the oil light would flicker on and off very fast on tick over, it would go off when revving even slightly or whilst in gear rolling down an hill for example..

Then i noticed last week off roading that after the 14 mile drive home the oil light was on most of the time, I'm guessing the rings are shot which is causing this?
 
Rings dont effect oil pressure at all.
Main cause of oil lights on the 200 engine is the cam shaft bearing shells moving sideways, its the main achilles heal of the 200 and one of the few things that almost makes it not financially viable to repair, and I reckon its due to owner neglect sometime in the past, the normal bodge is 20/50 oil, or just disconnect the oil light and dont worry about it until it gets noisy!
Of course it could be worn mains or big ends, either way other engine sounds a lot easier.
I cant remember what pressure the oil light comes on but its scarely low,under 5psi rings a bell.

The replacement engine will go in, however i wanted to full strip it and replace everything needed but now I'm ready for a new engine again the second plan was to pop the new engine in after a quick piston change and then fully rebuild the one thats in it now over a period of time but if the cam shaft bearing shells are shot its fooked.
 
Also need to see how a 300tdi turbo would fit onto the engine and what mods i would need to do to one or the other to get it to work because i know people with several 300tdi turbos sat around and non 200tdi argh lol

you can replace them ,you should do if rebuilding an engine in any case
 
so i can still rebuild the current engine once its out? i will get a new piston in this engine coming and get it in then ill concentrate on rebuilding the engine thats huffing and puffing now. ill just follow the haynes manual step by step and have a good go at everything powered by the info off this forum i should manage it.

What kind of tools do i need to ask santa for that would help me measure things to rebuild the engine?
 
Fitting and line boring the cam bearings is an engine shop job.
Lots of people fit the 300 turbos to the 200 engines, its dead common on the series land rovers as the 300 turbo gives more clearance and exhaust routing options.

Neglect, Ive only seen two do it, both times it was the shell just to the rear of the vac pump it had picked up and twisted and moved slightly, both engines ran fine just low oil light on idle, increase revs slightly and out it went again.
Ive got some pics but cant find them!

Just google 200tdi camshaft bearing, loads of info out there.
 
ive been having a good read through google. seems you need to undo everything to get it out and then it needs to be sent off with the block to be machined in and lined so they all match up. Wonder how much that would set me back..

Deffo will be popping a piston in this new engine and hopefully thats all it will need, then ill concentrate on this fooked engine and spend some time on it.
 
Ok so a quick update, no oil in the intercooler pipe top or bottom...

ran it with the top pipe off, didnt spit any oil out...

took top of the fuel pump off and there was no oil on the top of the diaphragm despite oil residue in the pipe.

Took the air feed to the turbo off and had a feel of the turbo turbine and its got a lot of movement, about 10mm each way so its royally fooked.

Took the pipe from the crank case to the rocker cover off at the top, it was blowing like it normally does when its running (guessing worn rings)

Checked the oil in the dipstick and its not even showing on the bottom of the dipstick (was at maximum about 200 miles ago because i serviced it and checked several times)

So where is my oil going??
 
turbo is off, had some oil on the downpipe after removal so your right there mate, dont think its quite 10mm but its a lot probably 5. New turbo time, Still have the issue of worn piston rings and low oil pressure, unless its been eating oil a while and then after ive serviced it and topped it up its started again.

Think the reason i serviced it was because of the oil vapor that was coming out the breather looked to me to look like steam and i thought id got water in the oil from changing the head gasket.
