I'm guessing this has been covered before and someone will point it out but here goes........

My 200tdi engine in the defender not a disco engine, gets hot! It goes up to the red and beyond even just idling! I've changed the water pump, thermostat, flushed rad and system but still the same issue! Anyone got any ideas? Possible head gasket?

Cheers In advance :)

Is it hot or just hot on the gauge?

fan pulling enough air through? Sounds to me like the head gasket is going though. Check the oil for water and see if the levels in the reservoir are dropping much. Is there an unusual colour to any smoke coming from the exhaust under acceleration? Be careful not to overheat it to much or you might warp the head, then it will be a pain in the arse to sort.

you checked the temp gauge has a good earth? does it go higher quicker if you start turning lights, etc on?

or is it actually getting really fooking hot?

Mine is doing the same , could you explain about the earths ? Mine reckons it at full heat within about 1/2 a mile oil and water both fine
