200tdi death rattle

The hard part will be finding another engine in good condition. As Turboman says you should really do some work on it before fitting. I would never buy a replacement engine that I hadnt heard running. I would go for option 3

Well if it's making a serious noise it is probably dead
Get another lump if you cant rebuild your own
Oh its certainly dead. If I could get another 200tdi I would and as others have said, fettle it before fitting. It is finding one that is not as knackered as the one I have!!

I think main problem with the 200 is they are so tough they still start and run okay when worn out.
My oldest one breaths like a steam train when hot, but starts on the button and pulls okay.
I have heat seized a 200 before, and it still ran after, that is how tough they are.

I know but I have one already :) I would like something that gets slightly more than 17mpg.....

Yeah but it would in a light 90 with LPG conversion:D.

I know I am a bad influence:p.

I am sure rebuilding an engine is well within your scope of ability, do you do it to your lump or another? Sump off and have a look would probably show the answer to that.

There are short engines on the bay for not much you have all the bits to make it a full 1:).

I have been having a bit of a look at Turners and various other sites selling engines.
I have decided that I am going to pull it complete and strip it on the engine stand.
Whilst it is out I will do the bulkhead repairs.
I will inspect it and then decide on how bad it is and which way to go next.

Thanks for all the input, I think I just needed a push to get things going!

Good choice, always good to assess what you have first.

I've got pretty much every spare available for 200's if you're going down the rebuild route. I've literally just finished stripping the main bits off another 200TDI Disco engine today which means I've got a built up block with pistons, crank, ladder frame and sump (sump will need replacing). The engine seems to be in very good condition and bores look good. Can get pictures tomorrow if you're interested- would be after £175 either collection from Southampton or can pallet up for you to organise collection? As I said, any other bits you need I would have in stock.

That sounds very interesting to me, it would have to be on a pallet as I am in north Lincs. If you put up a few pics, I can get a quote for shipment. Cheers!
