Hi LZ land, can anyone help me source the great big circlip (turbine housing retaining clip) which holds the inlet side of the turbo housing onto the CHRA? I have managed to lose mine (dont ask) so need a replacement to finish reassembly. It's an '85 110 but the engine is from a discovery 200tdi. As the turbo is supplied complete by Garrett i don't think there is a land rover part number but i was wondering if anyone had managed to find a replacement. DIN standard circlips seem to be too thick for this application.

Assume this is too small?
Now I'm (more) confused. It looks like the correct part, although that's the defender rather than the disco turbo. I had thought that the CHRA was the same for both, meaning the circlip should be the same. In which case i must have had a brain fade when recalling the circlip diameter... Can anyone confirm if the circlip size on the 200tdi defender turbo is the same as the 200tdi disco/range rover?

For some reason i recall it being 95mm in diameter

Hi Kwakerman, thanks to your post it inspired me with new terms for googling and i think I've identified the part as RTC6537
Glad that was of some assistance, I think the Def and Disco turbos are basically the same except for the rotational angle that the housing is fitted to the body at. Cost effective for the manufacturer to use what they have rather than redesigning the whole thing just to fit a different model vehicle

You could just measure the recess the clip has to go in, that will confirm the required diameter

Yep, i measured the housing as 95mm bore with a 2.5mm groove... Or at least that's what i recall. This rules out DIN standard circlips as they are 3mm thick for that diameter. Anyway, will double check when i get back home at the weekend.

I've looked a few Landy spares site - out of stock. Having said that, it's not an unusual turbo so one of the turbo repair companies should carry stock.

I would just measure the required dia. and buy a decent cir-clip - IIRC INA make 2.5mm thick clips in the bigger diameters - they certainly did a 98mm external clip in 2.5mm.

Did you paint the manifold and compressor housing? Looks good!

Yeah, turned out that the part is no longer available. I shall have another hunt around in the shed for the missing bit but it is looking very much like i will be having a go at sanding down a standard 3mm thick circlip.

Thanks! Was too lazy the clean the whole engine as it is covered in baked on clay (P.O. is a green laner) but as i had the head off i decided to fit a new turbo CHRA and splash a bit of paint around.

Thanks for the heads up about INA. Will see what i can dig up, although I'm really hoping to get it back on the road this weekend.

No worries, and I also realise I said compressor housing and in fact the side you painted is the turbine housing!

Which brand of paint did you use and did you rate it for good spray and coverage? Always keen to get reviews on products like this.

I'm afraid it was just an aerosol of silver VHT paint that was left over in the garage - the empty tin has gone off with the recycling. It looked really good when it went on but since then my oily fingers haven't done it much good.

Worth a phone call to these guys before you try to make your own circlip:

It turned out that the circlip groove was actually slightly tapered so a standard 3mm thick circlip kind of fit - maybe it sits in the groove by 1mm all the way around. Anyway, my impatience says try it without modification and if the compressor housing pops off then I'll have learnt a lesson which I'll share with the forum. Fingers crossed I'll be able to have it running tomorrow.
