Hi All.

I need some help with the disco 200tdi fitted to my series 3. It has the usual modification where the alternator is moved and positioned in the same place as on a 2.25. I recently went to change the belt using a 200tdi fan belt as i belive this is the one generally reccomended. Unfortunatly i could not get it to fit. It seems that compared to the one that is on it is a much wider section, meaning it sits further out on the pulleys and therefore wont fit over them all. The one that is on seems to be the same as the one on the 2.25 diesel which i took out. I recently replaced the alternator with a non-lucas one, but cannot see any difference in size or design that would precent it from being pushed over to get the belt on.

So, my questions are. What belts are everyone else running? Will i do any harm running a smaller section belt on the disco pulleys? I have feeling that the chirruping noise i've been getting is the belt as its not a perfect fit. It goes away with a spray of belt lube, but its back the next day.

Your thoughts would be greatly apprecited.

Ric

Are you sure all the pulleys line up ? I have seen some half an inch out of line.

Yeah, they look pretty good to me. With the thinner belt on it's working fine. I only noticed anything odd when I came to swap it for a "proper" one.

Thank you. That one looks very similar to the one I bought from Steve Parker, photo below from their website. Did yours fit easily? I am thinking that there must be something preventing my alternator from rotating far enough, as you have been able to use the same belt, presumably with no problems... For the sake of £6 I am tempted to get one like yours from ebay in case it is an inch longer. Thanks again. Ric

Measured the new one the number 1025 is mm around the outside.
Put a tape around my pulleys and got a measurement of 1040mm so it might not be long enough , but it is also could be sitting deeper in the crank pulley than the tape measure went.

Have you got the 200tdi alternator fitted or the series one?
Maybe if its the series the pulley is larger!

I use a AVX10 X 1000, mines from Gates, part number 6220MC, slightly shorter than stock but keeps the alternator well away from the chassis. This section belt is slightly to thin for my crank and water pump but correct for my alternator pulley. It doesn't bottom out on the crank or water pump pulley or slip.

measure the length of the belt required....... go yo Halfrauds get the same shape belt - the number is the length in mm

The halfords part numbers are the length in millimeters, with the letter after being the width or pattern on the belt, so 800b would be 800 mm, with a v-toothed belt that's wider than the 800a....

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I'm using the discovery pulley, but interestingly as Citizen Kane mentioned the belt looks correct for the alternator, but seems to sit well into the v on the crank and waterpump. I wonder if this is beacause on the discovery the alternator is driven from the PAS pump so it may use a different section belt. I can't tell easily on google images...

The one which is on is marked as 10X1025, which I am guessing is 10mm wide. The TDI fanbelt is marked 13A1025C, which is 13mm wide which explains why is appears shorter as its is sitting higher in the v. I think I will go ahead and get a replacement for the one that's on as it seems to work.

Thanks again.

Ric

Edited to correct tdi belt width

if you google 200tdi conversion into series land rover it shows that you fit a wider pulley, one off the vw golf get one from a scrapyard, but i left the origanal one on and it worked well never came off, i am at present doing another one and i am leaving the power steering pump on so the alternator stays in its origanal place, and gives more room for piping the turbo inlet

Yeah, i've been looking again and the alternator pulley is a different profile to the other two, its definitely narrower. I think if you were to swap the pulley for the correct section it would have to be smaller in diameter, or i would have the same trouble fitting the 1025mm tdi fan belt. I must have an odd alternator as i am sure it should push over further than it does. I'm going to stick with the 10mm one for now as i'm not pulling a big electrical load and i know it fits without any messing.

Thanks again for the advice, next time i have the alternator off i'll look at swapping the pulley.
