200tdi 110 back on the road!

Hi all,

Not been on for ages but whilst ive been off here ive been busy with both my 90 rebuild and a project 110. Heres a few pics of a 110 which I bought at a farm sale with the intentions of getting it back on the road for a budget of £2k (including cost of the vehicle) which included a ****load of welding on the rear chassis, new suspension and a few other bits. Please excuse the dodgy looking welding in the first few photos. They are solid but they just look naff because I'm not particularly experienced welding rusty metal plus I had issues with the wire feed on the welder plus wind and rain didn't help either . I was able to mostly resolve them but they continued cropping up every now and then when I least needed it.

Unfortunately it failed the MOT mainly on the bulkhead which underneath the fibreglass filler was totally rotten and beyond repair. Other bits included more chassis welding and a new steering box. I ended up buying a bulkhead off ashtree as I couldn't find a half decent one quick enough plus i'm not planning on selling it either. After a week flat out fitting the bulkhead I got it ready for MOT which it passed with no issues whatsoever. Total cost by then being just shy of £4k. I've been driving it round since and even took it fully loaded down to Malvern Land Rover Show with nothing but a couple of UJs to fix before I went down! All in all im really happy to be back driving a defender again and now im planning where to go with it (once the 90 is finished)

That was a crusty chassis,your welding looks ok to me. Might not be pretty but looks strong.
Mig welding with wind rain and rust do not mix well,check out Mig welding forum for hints and tips.

Thanks all!! Fingers crossed it'll last me another year or so until my other big projects are out of my way then that'll be in line for a renovation.

Already planned what to do with it: do absolute bare minimum to bodywork to keep the farm patina but do everything underneath to a good standard I.e new chassis, refurb engine and transmission etc then to finish it of a set of white wolf wheels with decent 750s of some description. Plus do a full interior renovation to make it nicer to be in (not that there's much wrong at the minute)

How do doors get dented like that on the drivers side above the handle? Mine has it and I cant work it out

Because the strikers start to fail, and then when you push the door closed.................hey ho,......dented door.

The hinges were knackered so the doors required a good slam, the passenger side cappings had come loose so the door had to be slammed even harder, so much so that the door has a nice twist in it now
