Probably the easiest way to get flywheel timing pin in place in a series would be to loosen the gearbox mountings and jack the box up.
Looked at cutting a hole in my cross member when I had engine out but decided against as its a galvanised chassis.

Thanks I thought you had to put the pin in the bellhousing so good to know, I have taken the pipe off and put a bolt in the pump it self would that do the same thing or would you block it up with something else?

Ive looked at it myself and getting it in would require very bendy arms. The other difficulty is that there are two slots in the flywheel and it's difficult to tell which is the right one. Just do it by when valve 1 is fully open the piston is at top dead centre Use that as a rough guide then line the arrow with the woodruff key in the crank.

Couple of tips in this video on how to check timing / TDC without having cover off timing case.
So when at TDC your 9mm pin should be able to slot into injector pump through small inspection plate.

TDC on flywheel and web would be a good indicator to see what position the No 1 valve was in !
TDC mark is not in line with keyway hence its angle towards the alloy web.

Don't know if this make any diff but taken my glow plugs out numb 1 at front was clean 2 3 4 all had oil on them? There not wired up haven't needed to use them starts first time,
Got bits for timing belt but not looked at that yet
