Hi All, Before I go too far down the rabbit hole, my 2009 Puma wont start. I assumed that as it hadn't been run for a few weeks the battery might be stuffed.

Put a meter on it and it cranks, sounds like its about to run but just dies. Battery voltage dropped to under 11V while trying to start. (measured at battery terminals)

I figured that as the battery was one month past its 5 year warranty, it just couldn't crank out enough amps. On the tester is was showing ok ish, slow drop in voltage.

Just put a new battery on, same thing!

Turns over, sounds like its just about to run and dies. Battery voltage still dropping to between 11v and 10v as it does so.

Don't think its a bad earth or pos lead as I am seeing volt drop across the battery.

Could it be something horrible like water in somewhere it shouldn't be?

Could it be the immobilser messing about?

It's always started fine before, despite periods of sitting for a month or two, with a battery minder on.

Any advice welcome!

Difficult to say without seeing it first hand. My puma will start on the button even if I let the battery fall below 12 volts (have done this as low as 11.9 volts before turning the key). So I would rule that out. Also rule out the immobiliser, I don't think it would even turn over if immobilised. From what you say I would investigate fuel delivery first. Starting with checking the fuel filter, replace if necessary. Check the in-tank fuel delivery pump (2.2 puma only, 2.4 does not have one) is getting fuel to the high pressure pump. There is a thread in the Puma engines section of the forum regarding changing the fuel filter.

Well problem solved! It was the poxy immobiliser. Who'd have thought it would allow the engine for fire or even turn over.

Tried locking and unlocking the car. Nothing, so got second fob and tried that. Locked and unlocked fine. Then it started on the button as usual.

Oh well, at least I have a new battery now!

This is what it was doing:

Glad you got it fixed. Probably not the immobiliser itself at fault, but the battery in the fob. There is a procedure for changing the fob battery, MUST be followed. (I am assuming it is the same as the 2.2 procedure). Details will be in the owners hand book.

Thanks, I'll make sure to follow the manual.
