They are plastic crap anyway that won't last more than a couple of years and
they don't do a proper job anyway. Buy a Kirby (about £1,000 now if you
haggle), had one for 18 years and it still beats a Dyson hands down on
performance, and how many plastic Dysons would you have to buy in that time,
so it's also cheaper in the long run too.

I wonder is it possible to retrofit an old and reliable engine in the new
defender, junking the dashboard while your about it and cutting out some
vents under the windscreen, now thats more like it :)

Well mine's lasted for 5 years with no problems so far, mind you it's
only been used about 30 times in those 5 years ;-)

It does tend to get used to suck leaves out of car engine bays, suck
up bits of wallpaper stripping, plaster I've chipped off the walls,
the yearly invasion of crickets etc etc, it's handled it all OK so
far.

I don't think we should bin the ford engine without giving it a go. I agree
with the dash, silly looking thing, and as Richard points out, lacks space
for fags, mobile phone, sandwiches, pop etc.

Did you see the test in Land Rover World disco3 Rangie Sport <cough> and
110 defender in the comparison table the Santana beat the defender and as
I have posted I am seeing a lot of them about in the Lake District and
Scotland ( I get about a bit ) the big test will be whether NATO buys them
commonality is near enough essential in a battlefield scenario or you end up
having more support then frontline units.

Well you are lucky, my sis-in-law's first only lasted a couple of years .
Her second one didn't fair much better. Now she has a Henry.
So at £200+ each for a Dyson you don't need many failures in 18 years (and
counting) to make the metal Kirby, which includes a carpet shampoo system, a
good deal. Besides the fact it actually works and they guarantee to keep
spares available.
I've tried two Dysons owned by others and their power and efficiency are
laughable, after using a Kirby they just do not appear to work. A case of
you get what you pay for.

Very true. I borrowed a mate's Kirby and then went and bought one on
the spot (a used one admittedly so the price wasn't too painful ... £300).

I've got a George. 's bloody good, and not all that pricey. OK, it's
plastic, but well-made plastic and it does a nice job on shampooing carpets.

nice motor, though, and I probably would buy one if I were in the market for
a LWB wagon as the other improvements are notable too.

The only reason I bought they dyson in the first place (can't believe
we're talking about vacuum cleaners in this group) was because the
model I bought had the hypo-allergenic filter thing, one entire side
of the machine is dedicated to filtering ****e out of the air. I
needed that for a while but once that was over I removed it as it kept
clogging up with brick dust and plaster.

All they've ever done, that I've noticed, in mine is to let fresh air and
water in. The new dash will hopefully let as much or more air in without the
water. I personally will not miss the water as I assume they will still let
a bit in through the doors for the benefit of the nostalgic.
