Hi everyone I bit the bullet and ordered optimil hinges for the front doors of my defender, does anyone happen to know the correct part number for the bulkhead captive j nuts please mine is 2005 defender td5, they seem to come in various part numbers and thread sizes which is confusing

I've replaced these on my own and a friend's Land Rover. I think the thread size is 8mm if I remember correctly. Earlier ones were UNF, but you'll be well past that era. By far the best are the ones where the threaded part is welded or bonded to the clip. There are others where a square nut is folded into the clip and they tend to liberate themselves.

When I took the hinges off mine (drilled) I stuck a magnet down the inside of the A pillar and recovered about 6 old captive nutz rusted to buggery along with half a kilo of rust.

I lose a lot of stuff down inside the bulkhead too. Those rubber bungs and grommets that decorate its various holes are apt to drop down inside whilst being refitted, and are not magnetic. I just keep putting Dinitrol in on top of them and nothing's rusted through yet.
 
Thanks everyone I ordered ASR1459 this seems to be the correct years but I’ll try them out before I take everything apart, was going to buy stainless but they won’t be magnetic if they happy to fall down the bulkhead lol!!
 
Make sure you a) order more captive nuts than you need or b) have a flexible magnet that can reach the majority of nuts that fall into the bulkhead channel
 
I would also second stainless, and although the folded steel construction because they are stainless mine came off with no issue for my current rebuild and have been fitted about 8 years.

If you are careful and take your time they should not fall down into the bulkhead! I have also found a large screwdriver through the bolt hole in the bulkhead means if it does pop off for any reason it cannot fall all the way down. Although it cannot be fully fitted with the screwdriver in place it can be started so it is secure and then just need pressing fully home after you have removed the screwdriver.
