Hi Everyone,

I've had my TD4 for about three years and she has been very good to me.

I recently had the cat stolen so have had this replaced with one from another Freelander TD4 that my friend was using off rd. I must admit the car was sitting on the drive for over a week without being run. And then I gingerly took it to the farm early one morning to get the exhaust fitted. (2miles at 15-20 MPH)

All was well until yesterday when I noticed that the engine was producing lots of steam from the exhaust and the temp gauage was rising quite quickly instead of the half a day it nornally takes to get into the middle of the gauage. I checked the water and it was low and still Pink. I checked the oil filler and this had a very light creaming (I mean light) in it, So I let it cool and checked the dipstick for the same. Nothing?

I'm hoping this is not a head gasket failure and may be something else?

If it is does anyone know how much this might cost?

Many thanks

The book time for a straight head gasket change on the TD4 is around 9 hours. If things need engineering on the head, then you are looking at 13 or 14 hours.

We did a head on one about 12 months ago and the bill including VAT was around £1200. That included crack and pressure testing the head and doing it by the book with no short cuts so that would include a fair bit of additional hardware during the reassembly.

I have been checking the water and filler cap regularly and since cleaning the cap the water and oil levels have not moved, nor is there anything around the cap anymore??

Would this be a faulty temperature sender??
