Hi
I was wondering if you could help. Recently bought a 4.4 V8 :) (the BMW version) and within the week the coolant level low warning came on. Took it to local garage and they topped up the coolant. Only problem is that the same warning came on the other day less than two weeks after first warning.
The warranty runs out on Saturday and worried that it might be the head gasket. I checked the oil and it is new oil (mmm) and can't smell or see anything funny with it. No tell tales signs I can see apart from the coolant level warning.

In garage now doing a pressure test etc.

Is the head gasket a problem on these engines????
Is there a common place where there could be a leak or is it a Land Rover quirk with the coolant???

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to be lumbered with a dud.

You need to register the fault with whoever you bought from before the warrenty runs out. It's is entirely their responsability to sort it out. As long as you make sure they are aware of the fault before the end of the warrenty period. Don't fiddle with it, change anything or get any other garage involved.

Hi,

Check the actual coolant level as it may be a false indication that it's low.

To do this, make sure it's cold and then remove the expansion tank cap. There is a vertical red plastic float in there which will bob up to indicate the coolant level. If the plastic indicator tells you the level is ok, then you have either a faulty reed switch (bayonet type into the underside of the expansion tank), or a float (inside the tank) which has absorbed too much coolant and become heavy.

The reed switch is an easy change, no coolant loss as it's all external. If it's the float then you need a new expansion tank.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the replies guys!!
Apparently a bit of a pig where there was a leak in one of the pipes. Thank God. Being fixed now.
Hopefully no other issues to report unless you guys know of something that I need to look out for???

Update.
