L322 2002 TD6 Random no crank and battery light

Right, i knew i shouldnt have thought it but it had been sooooo reliable until now!

Went to filling station other day, pulled up and filled up. Paid, came to leave and starter cranked for about 1 second and stopped and then refused to crank again!

Chap behind the till helped me push it into a parking spot. couldnt do anything so called RAC. He power probed starter and it fired up. However the battery light is on! Checked charge rate and its 14v. The light on the dash for the gear selection flickers on and off as you drive along like its a loose connection somewhere. The one on the centre console doesnt.

Any idea guys?

Sounds like a bad earth strap ,thats where id start try earthling the engine to battery ,and body with a jump lead .see if there any difference its a start or maybe not

Check the earth points and the engine earth strap passenger side by the the engine mount, earths can be checked with using a good jump lead.

I should add, when i returned home, i switched it off and its started ever since but dash gear light flickered a few times and now stays off unless i put it into manual mode.

As posts#2and3 jump lead from battery negative to engine,if it starts and no flickering light the new earth lead required.

I Did add a reply further down. Engine started everytime since i got home that day.

Electrical problems are a bastard, you can't see or smell them, unless they go on fire. keep a set of leads with you for when it happens again at least it will eliminate one possible failure point.

Any idea why the battery light would be on though when it’s charging fine?

I'm not electrically minded but my understanding is that the battery light is earthed until the alternator charges and the negative becomes positive so the light is extinguished.perhaps I haven't explained that correctly.

Check for earth strap that is on it's last legs. You may be getting intermittent connection.
The dash light may be a separate issue.
Battery light could be your alternator failing.

Addit: have you used diagnostics? Also any water ingress?

Water ingress ive had in rear n/s corner as sound system played up. will try a jump lead to engine if and when it does it again. alternator is charging at same rate prior to this non start. ran snap on the engine management and nothing related shows up. only fuel issue i know about.

What about men who work on cars, do you admire them?
On a 2002 I'd be checking your earth straps first chance you get. If it hasn't happened it will. There is a diagram on the pages somewhere of all locations.
Can't see the sound system ingress being the issue. However, on that did you check the quarter light trim. I put the dealer preventative in the component space before any issue, but when had polishing her , found a gap from outside, to inside, the width of my pinky, where sealant had gone. I know at least one other member of this site found same thing.
Can only think if battery light is on and other light flickering, that you may have a loose connection behind binnacle.

Don't think hes got the proper understanding of RR owners ship yet

So its still starting ok, not missed a beat again. I have now got jump leads and a power probe in with the spare wheel.

What could be causing the battery light to come on?

Can someone enlighten me how to remove fan and shroud? I’ve lost count of how many ‘Rave’ manual links I have tried. One downloaded but won’t actually open.
