Hi All,

Im in the market for a vehicle to get me from Essex to Solihull once a week. I wasn't actually looking for a RR, but a cheap car has come up; Ive found a new shape RR on a 52 plate, but as mentioned it does have 200,000 miles on the clock! The mileage doesnt bother me, but I seem to be getting mixed reviews on this BMW TD6 engine.
The car has full service history, but really I was after some your guys opinions, will this just be a money pit?
Is there anything I should be looking out for?

Would a replacement engine at a later date be a ridicolous amount of money??

really apperciate any help,

B.

LMFAO, it is of course said vehicle, how can you come to that conclusion with the 8 word description lol?

Gearbox/transfer box and front diff problems well documented.

Only way I'd consider it is find out how much a spare engine and box from a written off one is. Factor that in v one with reasonable mileage.

Personally buy a lower mileage one or accept you can't afford one and are buying a the **** end of the market

Thanks for that.

How did you come to the conclusion that I cant afford one? The amount that im spending on my (third) car is by choice, not by financial barrier.

Appreciate your worry though.

Also bear in mind the mileage your looking at you will have difficulty shifting it

I might re-consider the amount im spending, it depends on how long I need to drive to Birmingham for.

maybe I'll look into 11K ish....

If you get it be prepared to run it into the ground because no one will want to buy it off you again, I was put off by anything with over 100k on, the gearboxes are a weak point on the TD6 and turbo and injector problems seem to be quite common issues on forums too.At 200k I would think the engine in it would be pretty tired by now as the L322 is a big heavy car and to be fair the TD6 is a bit underpowered, fuel economy wise there it isn't as big gap between the TD6 and the 4.4 as you would think, about 22 MPG compared to 17 for the 4.4.
Also HSEs are usually a bit harder to shift too as most people want all the toys in the Vogue.
I got my 4.4 Vogue for £12k with 70k miles, fully documented LR history and in a desireable colour combo of Java Black with cream leather.
If you can go to £11k you will be looking at a lower milage, higher spec 4.4 or a higher milage TD6 HSE or a Vogue in an unpopular colour.
I would consider a 4.4, the difference in prices between a tidy example one of those and a TD6 buys quite alot of fuel, also there's more room for negotiation.

The front diff recall is free from LR just to add.

Quite a few olders 4.4's have been converted to LPG. Have you considered one of these?

This gives the power and refinement of the V8 with fuel costs that are similar to the TD6. I have just bought one and its quite nice putting 30 litres of fuel in and getting change from £20.00.

Be aware that some LPG conversions are better than others and that fuel consumption while running on LPG is higher than running on petrol, something like 10-15% higher.
