I'm going to fit an after market head unit into my Freelander.

I'd like to keep the steering wheel controls if possible but to be honest it's no biggy.

I know you can get head unit specific harhesses that do the power/ speakers etc and with a "patch lead" you can use your steering wheel controls still.

Has anyone fitted one of these? Not the power speker harness, the patch lead as I assume it connects to the steering wheel controls.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being a 2 minute job with a tea break half way through & 10 being a day long job with lots of sweating, swearing, and re-reading instructions, how difficult is this to do? Do I have to remove the steering wheel etc right back to the multiplug on the back of the controls or is the correct connection much simpler to reach?

If it's going to be apain then I probably won't bother but like i said, it'd be nice

I replaced my Becker with a Pioneer unit and so had to solve the same problem. The kit I purchased was effectively in three parts. The control unit was common to a number of vehicles and consisted of a small box to be tucked behind the radio. There was a head unit adapter lead to suit the Pioneer and finally loom interface.

This last bit was a male and female plug either end of a short loom. All it required was to drop the lower steering column cover and find the socket of the cable coming from the rotary coupler. Remove the exist loom plug, fit the adapter in instead and plug the car plug into the short loom. All fairly straightforward if you are confident enough to be changing the radio yourself anyway. The only thing that caught me out was there was a jumper to be removed in certain circumstances but I needed to remove the power completely for the jumper status to be detected.
