Hello All
I have a 2002 vogue SE which I have owned for eight weeks. It is my first Range Rover and I am very pleased with it apart from one very annoying fault that I hope you can please help me with. It was purchased as a very low millage car at just 26K miles. I did contact the original owner who kept it until 2008 he confirmed the miles but I have my doubts now.
The main problem is a whine that appears at 15mph and stays until 25mph it then starts to reduce, at 60-70mph and above it is silent. I am reasonably sure it is road speed related and defiantly not engine speed related. It only appears under acceleration and disappears when coasting or decelerating. There is also a slight vibration only when starting off below 5mph this is engine speed related but I probably would not have noticed this if I was not looking for clues.
The reason I did not spot it on the test drive is that it is only slight when it has been stood overnight and becomes at its worst when it has been left standing hot and then driven hours later.
I have already disconnected both diffs in turn noise still present. I have also spent a lot of time underneath looking for anything touching and transmitting noise so I am left with Gearbox or Transfer Box. Both gearboxes are full and oil looks clean. I have changed the Transfer Box oil it looked clean but smelled very metallic.
My questions are
Do they all do this? ( I drove a 97, I am sure it was quieter)
Is there a fault with the very last p38s maybe gearbox mountings that are too hard or a bad batch of garboxes?
Can the transfer box whine?
I have read that some people have put gear oil in the transfer box is it to cure a whine?
Any other ideas?
Thanks
Adrian
