Im getting a rather horrible noise when the turbo kicks in, it sounds as if the bearings have gone in the turbo unit.
I have given the vain's a wobble and there is a little play but not a lot.
It sound kind of like the barings are dry, but as far as i can tell there is fresh oil at the oil feed pipe.....I'm now a bit stuck at what to do next.

Now should there be any movement, or am i right in thinking its on its way out?

Can i change the barings?

Is a the disco unit similar enough to put on my defender manifold?

the disco unit will not line up with the exhaust.

There should be some play, but a miniscule amount - like a barely feelable click when wobbled.

They aint too hard to do - look

(I realise this is a 300 one, but i changed it - took no time.)

Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, i paid £50 for my replacement off ebay, bargain. LOADS more power an all, cos it was workin propper!

if its making a noise as if its about to die, do not use your vehicle as you run risk of the turbo breaking up if the compressor wheel starts hitting the casing, thus knackering your engine if it ingests the bits!

surely as its a 200 tdi then the intercooler should stop it ingesting any bits. but there is the possibility of oil contamination via the turbo return pipe

yeah mine contaminated the oil. Bastid poxy tiny piece of swarf jammed the oil pressure releif valve had to take the sump off to get it out.

Mine had impacted the casing a few times too, but i appear to have got away with it.
