Well since been made redundant my new job is not as well paid so i looked into cheaper fuel for my landy (90 with 200 TDI disco engine) I found a place local that sells biodiesel for £1 a litre and its been running nice on it. It smokes whitish a bit for a minuite on start up and slightly down on power but for the price I can live with that. After a bit of searching if found someone who will sell me used veg oil for 50p a litre. If I was to filter this really well say down to 1 micron and mix it with bio to thin it would this run OK? Anyone who has tried this I'd love to hear, If it works it would save a lot more money!

Cheers. Tom.

PS if anyone wants to know where I get £1 bio diesel from and is near Leeds/Wakefield pm me and I'll send you the address.

Tom,
our tescos does new sunflour oil on bargain at times for 10 litres for £9,
£1 a litre at other times when you buy 2x5 litre bottles....
costcos and other food outlets does it cheaper I`ve been told but not bothered to go there.

Cheers easye1 I can put neat bio in for a pound a litre but the waste veg oil is only 50p a litre so i was wondering if I can filter it and mix it in as its half the price of new stuff.

Do you run new veg oil 50/50 mix?

Cheers. Tom.

cant help you there tom, as i run 50/50 derv and fresh new tesco stuff,
oh, apart from still running on a balls up of £20 of unleaded
had some veggie in already for my derv addition, so put another £20 of derv and since another 20 litres of veggie, done well over 300 miles on it all no worries,
but would`nt do it again out of choice.....

is your bio good and clear?
as you mentioned white smoke on startups....

I`ve never knowingly bought bio, but been led to believe most big named fuel outlets run 10% bio in the pump derv (diesel)....

maybe others know more about your questions tom ??

If you use waste veg oil you MUST de-water it or your injection pump will corrode from the inside.
Your fuel filter will stop some water but a lot.
Spen valley for the bio?

Oops LOL did it run ok after the unleaded?

Yes the bio is clear as a wistle, nice clean stuff and smoke free after a couple of mins.

Hi, didn't know that so cheers for that! - just done some reaserch and found a drywash, something called eco-pure apparently removes moisture and impurities. Its 25 quid a bag but can treat 300-600 litres apparently is this any good for removing moisture?

No not spen valley its a small place in Batley and its 5p a litre cheaper there too.

So does anyone recon the cheap 50p/L waste veg oil filtered to 1 micron and treated with drywash then mixed with biodiesel 50/50 would be OK?

Cheers!.

Eco crap is used to remove water from biodiesel not waste oil.
You will need a cone bottom drum with a heater and a pump in it.
Heat to 90c while pumping it for a couple of hours then leave it overnight. Most of the water will sink to the bottom where you can drain it.
Ideally it should be pumped over a uri geller set up or on the side of the drum to aid water evaporation.
Go and have a poke on vegetable oil diesel - home for a better idea of whats involved.
There is a wvo/straight oil section which will have all the answers.
Do a search before you ask any questions.....if it's been asked before you will get flamed worse than in here!!

yep, still rattling along....
the thought of wasting all that fuel made me knees weak...:D

out of choice its not to be advised, but our tough as old boots 200`s do seem to accept it....

good luck on your quest for cheap motoring tom..

I have previously run my 200tdi offroader on neat waste veggie oil after sticking it thru a pair of jeans would advise paying more attention than I did with it for an everyday driver although I had to use a different fuel filter as pure oil wont pass through the land rover one

Thank you much appreciated I'll have a good read.

Should be fine. I run my p38 on 100% waste veg oil (WVO) which I filter using a bedsheet, then a centrifuge. My oil is already dewatered as it comes out of my own fryers where it was sitting at 170 c.

I have a freind who started to collect free WVO from various restaurants. The quality is very variable. He rough filters it throgh a sieve, then leaves it in a cube. After a week or two virtually all the contaminants including water have settled to the bottom. He has a tank fitting above the seperation line (i.e above the crud) which allows him to draw off oil for the final filtration.

He ran 50/50 without any conversion for over a year. Now he has put in a heat exchanger (but no startup tank yet). He hasn't decided whether to fit a startup tank or an electrical heater for the vehicle coolant so that it'll be at operating temperature before startup.

Give it a go - you can always adjust the ratio.

Thanks for that! Is the tank fitting like a brew barrel tap fitted into the side of the barrel a few inches from the bottom to drain it off?

I'll give it a go once iv got through my bio diesel stash, proberbly next month, even if I can run 50/50 through summer its a bonus.

Was it 50/50 with biodiesel?

Many thanks.

No need for heaters or specialist dryers in this setup - water drops to the bottom over time.

Yes the tank tap is a brass "tank fitting" he uses a pipe and a tap on it. It'll need to be at least 12" up the side of the 1000l IBC tank to allow it to remain above the crud. You will see a clear line form once the settling proces works. You can then draw off oil for filtering. When the crud gets to within 2" of your take off, you can drain some from the base fitting. The unuseable crud can still be recycled at most council depots or even sold / given to recyclers!

You of course will probably be able to get free oil direct from restaurants. Be professional, ask nicely and be regular.

My friend now has over 3500L spare which he is sharing with some others for a contribution of 50p a ltre.

Until you prove your filtering setup - the low cost way will be to use a bag filter over a drum. (fleabay) You'll need to top it up regularly and walk away to let it slowly filter. Later you may decide to invest in a decent centrifuge (£1k+).

My friend has experimented with various blending agents - including parrafin and ordinary diesel. Beware you will attract attention - so dont use parrafin, and keep basic written records in your vehicle showing how much home filtered fuel you use. You are allowed 2500L a year without paying any tax. Use 2501 litres and you pay duty on the lot! Records required are - 1. amount put in tank 2. date. (not even a record of your mileage!) So no reason to not comply.

I myself did use bio and wvo 50/50 until I converted my vehicle with heat exchangers and a startup tank.

i have a 300tdi so what i pick up off this post is that if i go and put in 20L of normal diesel from the petrol station then go to Tesco for 20L of veg oil and put that in too so its a 50/50 mix it will be fine ?

if so what about changing filters, pipes etc or wouldn't it choroid like bio ?

cheers
Josh (newbie landy owner)

if your "biodiesel" is poor starting its most like vegetable oil and not likely converted to bio.

Proper bio runs just like diesel

The comment about veg not going through the landrover filter is tosh, mine runs perfectly on 100% wvo, as does our shogun and the l200!

yeah, itll run fine. You can whack a smidge of petrol in the veg (5%) but during the summer 50/50 will be fine.

id suggest that people be wary of these garages selling so called "biodiesel" out of ibcs. Its been noted that quite often its just svo with paraffin or kerosene in it.

Or if it is actually "bio" its really poor quality and not dewatered.

I have a 200tdi (disco) engine in my 90. Thinking of running with shop bought vegetable oil at possibly 50/50 but probably 100% diesel during winter. I only do about 5-7K a year so assume tax won't be an issue?
Whats the longest anyone has been using this kind of set up and what issues, if any, has it caused the engine etc
