usual checks, excessive crankcase pressure from worn rings/bores, can also indicate blown head gasket, excess pressure in cooling system, immediate starting even from cold, little or nothing unusual go's wrong with 200s,just general wear really

Hi i've just bought a K reg 90 with 140k on the clock pretty good condition a few minor repairs but mostly sound, i just read this and thought, do you mean immediate starting is a bad thing or a good thing, as i turn the key within 2 seconds the engine has started , any reason for me to worry?

Ah don't think ye need tae worry about the imediate starting. Mines fires up every time with no probs.. apart from the time me starter motor was goosed!;)

Everyone says that the 200is easier to work on - I don't see how - I have worked on them both and they are very similar. The main external notable difference (and a difference that will influence normal repairs - pumps and things) is the single serpintine belt that comes off simply by holding the tensioner back - good plan, not faffing with shifting alternators and things, its a smoother slightly more refined engine.

Any 300tdi will drop into a defender and it is easier to get an old disco, the 200tdi's from discos need the turbo altered or the bulkhead butchered. All your really need is some pipe extensions and 2 new mounts welding in.

The military didn't use the 200tdi and kept the 2.5 until the 300tdi came out, which also means that there will be parts about for the 300tdi for longer as the military still use them and they are still shipped with 300tdi's in some parts (not the international verison but the proper 300tdi).

In my experience/opinion, if you can service and mainatin a 200TDi, you can do the same with a 300TDi, especially the early non ECU controlled ones.

As far as engines go, even the 300TDis aren't exactly 'high tech'.
