hi thanks for the replies

the caravan is 1.500kg

current car merc 300td auto 35 average mpg

roads have killed the suspension

glad to here a some people have good results with there 200 tdis

the 7 seats would be useful at times too so that also makes me think 4x4

i also here the landy is not too bad on good bio

the landy ive seen advertised has good history and he assures me no rot !
yet to check though
he wants 1700 for it
new exhaust
transferbox
timing belt
service
very clean inside and out
dont like the steel rims though !

would this be a fair price for a good 200 or is he taking the p*ss
there seems to be too many crap rot boxes about whish i could get one for under a grand but unless you buy one with starship miles on its very difficult , ive been through the whole of ebay and theres always something wrong.

i can wield a spanner as long as there plenty of info and easy to get parts
so its tempting rather than a car with better mpg most cars now anyway require very expensive parts and diagnostics so that adds up too

Id be tempted to wait a few monthe till the spring and the prices should drop a bit.
A disco can be run as an everyday car as long as it is looked after.

Personally I wouldnt touch a Jeep unless you have big pockects as they are dear on parts and tend to chew axels up. And blow head gaskets and heads on the TDs.

If you can afford to run 2 motors have a disco for the fun and buy a Passat TDi estate for towing.

as a couple we run a 200tdi a fourtrak and a pug 306..... pug is the wifes does the school run ...and a lot of the running arround locally... i use the other two the fourtrack for local dirty jobs... it blows its water out so never goes far from home but is there as the standby... like when the disco bust a cv on the evening before xmas eve with an inch of ice on the first half mile outside the gate. the disco does all the towing and long runs and is the general workhorse.... even got 7 seats when needed for the pub or school run.
disco cost 1200 about 5 year ago.... fourtrak 350 a couple of years earlier.... pug a few hundred and a knacked megane as trade in... could have got one cheaper privatly but this ones a local car from a little garage with low miles and no gimmicks except ps

as far as the disco is concerned everything is repairable with spanners no computers or electrickery to go wrong... and ive bought a mig .

all three are reliable have little or no depreciation and theres little gimickery to annoy me.

do sometimes wonder if i should swap the fourtrak for something more economical maybe a pug 405 or 306 estate... but nothing any newer with complex electrics.. immobolisers etc...

Regular thourough maintenance is the secret.

This seems to be the general consensus and I agree whole heartedly.
I had a family situation last year which meant I was driving about 150/200 miles a day for a couple of months and my disco didn't miss a beat and on AT tyres returned well over 30mpg.

i like the sound of less complex electrics and simple mechanics i dont mind having a go but alot of cars need diagnostics and main dealer parts is it cheaper in the long run ?

ive been offered a c5 2003 estate exclusive all bell and whistles 82000 leather for 1600 service history which is tempting as a tow car but damn have you seen the reviews lots of unhappy owners very bad reliability lots and lots of ecu etc faults

wish i could find a decent disco though seems a lot of crap out there

Hi i have a 92 200tdi and use it every day and i live on a farm touch wood it has never let me down and the only parts i have had to replace is brake pads allround and two tyres,

wish the first one was a manual or the second one had 4 doors ?

bit concerned with the autobox reliability , mpg difference or i may be wrong ?

christ man, they were just the first 2 examples I found in your price range after looking for 2 minutes:doh:
go on ebay, look for land rover discoveries and refine the search to the years '91 - '98 there's feckin loads to chose from.

hey mate sorry im not trying to offend you
ive been through the lot on ebay but havnt found one which fits the bill theres always something maybe im being to much of a fussy bas*ard

would like 4 door 7 seat manual not starship milage and with the rust sorted

maybe asking too much to have the rot sorted ?

maybe better looking in the summer

no offence taken mate:), realistically you want a 4 door disco with the rust issues sorted coz dickie seats are cheap and easy to fit and I wouldn't worry about mileage, as long as it's been serviced regularly and had the timing belt changed when it's meant to be these engines will go on and on.
There's disco's on here still going strong with over 300k miles on 'em.

After looking earlier we might be seeing an end to the "snow tax" as prices seem to be lower than a few weeks ago but you still would probably get a better deal in march/april.
