2 Oil Spots Underneath

Looks like a good aerosol coating of oil mist and dust, plus a leaky transfer box seal.

Have you have still got the engine cover on it (the black plastic thing with foam insulation beneath it) check to see how soaked in oil it is? Take it off, steam clean the engine block and then go for a trundle and see if anything appears from filler cap, rocker cover gasket or fuel lines. The NVH cover on mine leaked oil out every time it got warm , it had got saturated from oil blowing out of the filler cap due to the cyclone breather being blocked and the pressure building in the rocker cover. So clean engine, new cyclone breather, clean NVH cover (or renew the foam bit). You’ll soon spot fresh oil escaping….

Remember- it’s not an oil leak, it’s just marking it’s territory….

And in any case, it prevents rust, and makes it look nice and shiny.

my pas pump and box has a slight weep, makes the wet with ATF, but it only needs a top up a couple of times a year for the mileage I do.
Keeps the front of the chassis and bottom of the bulkhead rust free

This is the manual steering recirculating ball box, which uses mineral oil.

Quite a good rust preventer!

Took her to the local garage to give her a good jet washing, cleaned all the crud off underneath and got back - guess what... no leaks as yet?
It did have a minor oil leak on the last MOT which was fixed and also a power steering pump leak (new pump fitted nov 2020) so could possibly be old oil misting with heat etc.
Anyway chassis looks in very good order underneath, will give it another jet washing underneath come October time ready for sealing.

What product are you going to use on the chassis? There are several threads discussing the various ones available.

Not sure yet seen lots of threads, seen the self spray ones and also the Dina something that you can paint on?
Im not sure what would be best - painting will take longer but can get into all the nooks and crannys. Gonna do a bit of research on this one I think.

I always paint them, unless they are galv. And spray dinitrol on the inside.
Painting is more labour intensive, but Waxoyl type stuff on the outside is messy, and comes off on you when you crawl under the vehicle.
If you just want cheap, spraying old oil on is quite good if you don't mind doing it regularly.
Yours is self medicating a little bit already!

So took the Defender to LRS Specialist in Hull to check the oil leak, I must say these guys have been around 40 years -anyone in East Yorkshire with a Land Rover issue 110% check out going here, Mark knows his stuff , his Dad started the garage 40 years ago, brilliant Land Rover family business.
Anyway got it on the ramps and as was quite impressed with the condition underneath, the diff lock oil was a bit low so topped up but there's still a minor leak after driving so will wait until October when its going in for a full service/pre MOT.

So the oil saga continues.... I first thought it was just a few spots after driving but the car was parked up since Sunday afternoon and this morning it seems that its been continually dripping :/ so the leak seems to get worse when the cars been stood for 24 hrs.
The leak if your looking at the car side on is directly underneath where the middle seat/cubby box would be, possible gear box or is that too far forward for that?

Gearbox / Transfer box maybe? The seals on the transfer box are prone to leaking (like all output shaft seals!). Does the transmission brake drum show any signs of oil on it?
