Well... its got 205s but the wheels are being swapped ( long story, its all part of the deal with my mate the car dealer Im buying it off), it will have 205/70/16 on regardless of what wheels it comes with so I would have thought a wider footprint ( even though 30mm isnt much of an increase) & taller sidewalls (85) would be a bit of a free lift.
I have heard allsorts of crap about BFG all terrains like 70K miles out of a set.... best I ever got out of a car was 18K on Michelins... my bike kills a rear tyre in approx 500 miles so 70K I cant comprehend

bfg's are good for mileage, they are also expensive. wide tyres dont really improve your traction when offroading, sometimes they can even be a hinderance. the 70 on the 205 and the 85 on the 235 is the size of the side wall as a % of the tyre width. yes the 235/85's will lift it but not to a great degree ;)

Thanks for that, I understand the 'aspect ratio'
I just used this to check the rolling radius http://www.club80-90syncro.co.uk/Syncro_website/TechnicalPages/TRC , I input 205/70/16 VS 235/85/16.

Theres not a hell of a lot of height difference in the actual wheel centre which would determine how far off the deck the diff is....

Regarding tyre prices, I have been using tyres up at 500 mile intervals & they are currently £140 to replace so getting mega mileage out of a set of four at less per unit isnt so bad

EDIT: the link doesnt seem to be working, I Googled tyre rolling radius converter so anything that search brings up will tell the same story

Thats how a Disco should look, non of this namby-pamby polishing every weekend crap or I have got the biggest set of tyres crap. Mine is the same colour red/mud and is also on std suspension along with 235/70x16 BFG at's and has never got stuck using on greenlanes (not yet!)

It's not what you've got, it's what you do with it!;)

Also If you've got any of them "go faster side steps" take off cos otherwise you'll rip em off!!Like I did!:p

As Jason says experience counts and also getting out there and trying first, before spoiling a good capable Disco. Have a look at the "How to drive off road" DVD and you will see 2 std Discos traversing everything that 90's and 110's can do, only having tyres swapped for 235/70x16 AT's. Now that shows what experience can do for you, nothing to do with big tyres or suspension lifts. (Jason if you want a copy of it pm me.)

Thats defo how discos should look!!

Totally agree but am having a bit of a problem convincing the wife:( Looks like I'll have to get some of the mud off before we set off on our summer hols!!!;)

As yella seid, dunt matter how high you go yeh diffs don't budge, more chance of rolling, crap on road, gunna knack yeh props......and they look silly to boot on stilts!!.Don't know about you but I'd rather get stuck than roll.Just get out there on the sloppy stuff with some road tyres first, get yeh sen in a right mess, then try again with a decent set of off road tyres and you wont believe the difference, follow some other bod (within reason) and when you see where they go, you know you can!!!
If you've never done it you would'nt believe where these things go with standerd kit:)
