I Have just completed my first organised off road trip.I have a 1994 tdi discovery and have realised that i need extra height. Can anyone help me with what I am going to need and how difficult a job it is to do? How long it would take Etc.. I have limited mechanical knowledge but will have a bash. I use the vehicle daily for work so I wouldn't want to be without it for a long period with it out of commission.
Thanks
Keith

for a 2" lift all you need is 4 shocks and 4 springs you could change the flexi brake hoses as well but ya dont really need to. Of course a lift kit won't give you any extra ground clearance at all. as the diffs will still be in exactly the same place. for that you'll need bigger tyres. and you'll have to start cutting ur wheel arches and that'll mess with ur gearing and fuel consumption and on road handling an it really aint worth the hassle if ya want to use it as a daily driver.

i have the 3.5inch lift kit with pro comp shox and all u need is a decent jack, a spring compressor and a decent set or ratchets and spanners and a cheapy blow torch for heating up those rusty bolts sum wd40 and a mate!
ull be fine!
and it does affect the daily drive but its so worth it

gor some tyres of ebay for buttons, get a small lift with em to get the diffs higher is the first step lift wise, providing you dont go too big you wont have to start chopping arches. not sure on the size yer can get away with but am sure someone else on here can shed a bit of light.

A lift won't raise the diff only bigger wheels will do that. There are loads of threads on the 4x4 forums explaining what size wheels will go on a standard Disco and what and where you need to cut.

A lift won't raise the diff only bigger wheels will do that, isnt that what i just said???
am telling him to lift it using larger tyres to raise the diff redhand, dont know if you read it wrong or what.

Sorry I'd read it as "get a small lift" i:e 1 or 2 inch. I'd also said in my 1st post that only bigger wheels would actually increase ground clearance. The problem is when you fit the bigger wheels they foul. So you have to cut the wheel arches or fit a 2" lift to make room for em. which invalidates or increases the cost of your insurance, and for the extra 1" or so ground clearance you get it's not worth the hassle. on a daily driver

yer its all down to what off road se its gonna get, persoanlly i dnt see the point in a body lift if the diffs are at the standard height. sooner have larger tyres and cut my arches before i lift the body. am presumin he is running standard size tyres? ams sure he can go a larger profile up before it becomes inconvenient. we just need to get him what size exactly he can put on without mods.

Wow..does she feel 'top heavy'? I've lifted mine (check profile) and i love it but 3.5..that's tall..Or do you include the bigger tyres in that equation?

Hmm...looks nice on your avatar though matey. :)

not at all its a little wallowy to drive as u have 3 inches of tirewal to turn as well but thats it i have pro comp shox so its pretty solid i have massive spacers so my centre of gravity is still pretty low

this is how high she sits i have defender wheel arches on it to cover the wheels for mot and it serves a purpose catching the mud as well
