Hi,

I have a 96 defender hard top and was wondering the best way forward, which of the two mods would you recomend and why? what are the two's different pros/cons.

I want to know what would suit me best for off roading, i know the two of them together would be best, but my wallet doesn't stretch that far?

cheers

droop? huh?
i lift will always be handy off roading as u obviously get greater ground clearence for the deeper ruts n rocks and if u are going for replacement suspension then u will also have option of going for some serious springs and shocks for greater axle articulation on those twisty lumpy bits making overall a more compotent off roader!
a droop?

dropping your landy an inch or 2 will basically improve traction as when your wheels are high on one side, the droop will allow the others to gain traction.

the argument only really comes into play if your upgrading your wheels. +2" is the norm which will allow bigger tyres and allow them to articulate more under your arches than a standard set-up.

what driving mad said about raising vehicle height isnt strictly true as it only increases the height of your bodywork. geat for approach and departure angles but your axles are still where they were before you lifted. only way to raise axle height is to run bigger tyres... or portal axles!

so if your upgrading your boots now or anytime soon get a 2" lift. if your happy with your standard tyres and want to retain some of the road handling quality and the ability to enter multistorey car parks. get the droop travel.

check out mill services and llama. both do great suspension kits at very afordable prices.

i'll keep quiet from now on. the dowg is rite, oh so rite. where has my common sense gone? i've never ever heard of drooping. ever! quiet strange.
love peace and chicken grease

i should also add that i understand and know about 'drooping' just never heard it termed as 'drooping'

No mods necessary for a droop, just go real fast and jump alot of Berms until the springs bust out:D
2" lift can be done with a spring over.

Don't tell me you never seen a spring over?? Its the poor mans lift kit and here it is mostly done when only three inches is needed. Its called a spring over because you unbolt the axles from the springs and put the springs on top of the axle and bolt it back together. Have to change the pitman arm and reline the drive shafts and your done. Total cost is whatever the new pitman arm cost and "dampers" if you choose to change them.
depending on the vehicle you may need to do a little relocation of brake cables and the mounting points for the dampers.

Thanks Griffdowg,

I understand the principles of the droop/ lift although i wondered what would benifit me best, i have 265/75/R16 tyres on the defender so thats as large as i can go without the lift. The type of tyre i use is the grizzly claw because it's a cheap remould that works superb off road, any larger tyres and your talking alot of money unless you know differently? I know you can get a 80mm profile tyre although they are far narrower and i prefer the wider tyres. The existing tyres rub slightly at max lean just now. The issue is cost really i could go for the lift and put bigger tyres on it although this is quite an expensive outlay (i think) as oposed to the droop, what you think???
