This one had me stumped for a bit! Injection pump just started rattling/knocking and I started losing power, so I made my way home sharpish and set about finding the problem. First thing I thought was air getting into the system somewhere. So I spent ages checking fuel lines from tank sender, all the way to the injectors. I established that there wasn't any air getting into the system, so then I thought my injection pump was knackered. Not a good situation when I use this motor every day and rely on it to get to work, especially when I'm too skint to buy another pump, second hand or recon. What was odd, was that when I cracked the bleed screw on the filter housing, the rattling stopped and the engine picked up until it then started to die. At which point, I'd do the screw back up and then then knocking/rattling would return. (see video)

I then set about checking all the unions, banjo connections, etc, in the fuel line and, as a last ditch attempt at curing the problem before resigning myself to not having a motor for a while, I half heartedly checked the gause filter in the Delphi lift pump that I fitted last month. It was caked full of crap! I have recently started running on bio diesel and I'm obviously still dragging all the crap out of my fuel system. Cleaned the gauze filter and BINGO! Silent running injection pump again and the motor is running great
I'm well relieved that that's all it was, but it did strike me daft idea to fit a tiny gauze filter in the lift pump before the actual fuel filter.
