Hi all:D
Hi my 2.5td is releasing a lot of smoke/vapour from breif inspection appears to be coming out of the air filter. It smells like warm oil. I think its a crankcase breather pipe. but i havent a clue. just asking because if its a common srew up of the TD then just wanna know so i dont spend any time mesing about with it and just get a 200tdi.
But it would be nice to have it running(without smoke puffing out the rhs wing vent!) till i get a 200tdi.

Crank case pressurisation is very common on worn TD's and is either blocked breather/filler cap or worn/broken piston rings, worn cylinder bores. Try taking the dipstick out and place your hand or a rag over the dipstick tube to check for oil been sprayed back up the tube.

I've had thius problem for 6 months and 3,000 miles and it hasn't got any worst & doesn't affect the day to day running. So unless it's smoking really badly I wouldn't worry about it too much. 200tdi is deffo the way to go but you won't need to rush into it unless you're engine is very knackered. I've just acquired a scrap disco for the engine & transfer box. for my td 90.

'Tis the crankcase breather pipe and unless you want a small fortune trying to overhaul the engine your best bet is disconnect it from the air filter and let it vent to atmosphere, or into a collector. If the engine is breathing out too much oil vapour (eventually they all do) then the engine will start to run on it's own oil, overspeed and kill it self. And scare you into the bargain when the revs accelerate up the max and stay there. the only way to stop it at that point is stick it in 4th and drop the clutch to stall it.
The TD may just carry on like that for ages, but it will go bang eventually, usually when you most need the landy.
Get the 200 in there as soon as you can. :D

Thanks guys that great was thinking of diconnecting it. I have known a generator doing just that running on its own oil then dieing fantastically.
My friend said just run the td till it blows and stick a 200tdi in it.
:p

Eggzackerly what I did with my TD until I got a complete Disco dirt cheap. Then it was just a matter of creating the time to put the 200 into my 110. The difference is amazing!

Different as in the turbos are mounted high (Defender) and low (Discovery). The bell housing bolt pattern is different between the two.

A Defender 200 will go straight in yours, a Discovery engine will need the flywheel housing swapping in from your TD engine.

I would get a rotten Dicovery and then you will get all that you need.
