What do the team think?
Marge (2.5TD, 150k Miles) is, like many gals her age, indulging a little
too much in nasty personal habits. Specifically, she's taken up smoking
a bit too enthusiastically for my taste, belching clouds in the morning,
and blow-by, pushing oil back up into the air filter (the worst bit of
this is the smell through the heater!).
I know this is largely worn rings/liners, and that it's a relatively
simple job to whip off the head/sump and re-hone/rebore in situ,
replacing crank bearings at the same time. The engine's running well
otherwise, although I think it's a little down on power, so this is more
maintenance than repair.
I've found an engineer that will do it (comes highly recommended and
says he's done many Landys in the past), but the shock was the price -
700-1000 depending on Marge needing just honing, or an actual rebore.
I've a fortnight coming up soon when I won't need her services, so it's
an ideal time to get the job done - no inconvenience to me or time
pressure on the workshop. So is it worth doing, or should I look around
for (say) a TDI unit instead? Oh, and if I do go for it, what do the
team think about the price?
Regards,
Simonm.
