I just noticed that my alternator belt has a slight fray so obviously want to change it (on a 2.5TD). It looks like it may be a pain to change though as it is behind the power steering belt at the bottom and doesn't look like it will come off over the fan at the top - hmmm... I could just cut it off but can't really fit the new one in the same way ;) :p

Any tips or a how to guide anywhere?

Cheers

Richard

you need to slacken off the alternator and the three bolts holding the power steering pump on. then slip the belts off the pulleys it will then be possible to ease it over the fan Then reverse the procedure for getting the alternator belt back over the fan.1 blade at a time until it comes clear. replace PAS belt and tension it (I used a pry bar) while you re tighten the pump mounting bolts. For what they cost I'd fit a new PAS belt as well.

Haynes manual tells you but anyway:
Remove power steering pump belt
Slacken alternator mounting bolts and pivot alternator
Remove alternator drive belt
Reffitting is the reverse of this procedure but make sure you tension the belts correctly.
Easy!!!

So what I said then, but you forgot to slacken the Pas pump bolts off??

I am having problems with the alternator belt going slack, I take the slack out of it but it slackens off again very quickly, I think I will change both the belts & fit new "shakeproof" star washers on the alternator adjusting nuts, it has to be those loosening that is causing the belt to slacken so quickly.
