My 2.25 petrol needs replacing in my series 3. I have the chance of a good cheap 2.5 na from a defender. I know I will need to wire up heater plugs and a switch for the diesel pump. I will also need to adapt the battery tray and driver side engine mount.

Does this engine bolt onto my series box? Or do I need to swap bits over? Flywheel housing/clutch etc??

What is the best way of putting in a diesel return line.??

Oh and what do I do about the exhaust manifold?

Any info much appreciated :)

P.s I don't want to fit a 200tdi

The 2.5 N/A should be a good match for the Series - it should have around the same power as a decent 2.25 petrol, and is a simple design. The water pump to heater fittings may be different - at the thermostat housing, but you should be able to mix and match to suit. The distribution pump has a cut off solenoid, which needs a live feed - the existing petrol ignition switch can do this. As you have mentioned, you'll need wiring and a relay for the heater plugs. A simple push button and suitable relay will do. It will be useful to look at the parts manual for the defender - available free on t'internet.

i have fitted a 2.5dt to a series 2 recently, it will bolt straight on, i did have to adjust my gearbox mounts by machining slots into the bolt holes to allow the use of the original mounts, you will have to use the 2.25 block mounts on the 2.5 though but they should bolt straight on
