Hi, one of my m8s 1987 90 is kicking out a lot of white smoke. could this be a timing issue and also how do u check the timing? as im interested to no how :D. thanks

white smoke is indicating its a head gasket problem. is it using water, if the timing was out which i doubt it would run like a bag of nails i would check the simple things first before going straight for the timing,

No not necessarily – it could be a tooth out which could lead to white smoke but it would still run albeit down on power etc…

It may have jumped a tooth or the pump body could be loose on the timing chest and it’s slipped – but I think you ought to look into other things first before you footer with the timing. It’s relatively simple, if it is down to timing and it’s white smoke you would advance the timing slightly by loosening the 3 nuts on the pump body where it mates to the chest and turn the pump towards the engine (clockwise while looking at it from the front). If the belt has jumped you might not be able to get it perfect but you can probably get it close enough, failing that it’s a strip down, and line everthing up again (fit new belt and idle pulley if you get this far unless the belt has been done fairly recently).

Another thing it could be is compression is down on one or more cylinders causing the diesel to vapourise (go white) but not burn – however this WOULD lead to a lumpy running engine.

Diesel vapour really is not good for you but a quick sniff will tell you if it is diesel or water vapour – water has that sort of cooling antifreeze smell.

Does it always white smoke, and if not how long for?

it smokes the worst when its first started. Get a nice big cloud of white smoke and have to wait for the engine 2 warm up a bit before i start driving else it stalls. Puffs out a bit when idling in queues as well. Not sure about normal driving :S it probably does

smells of diesel. also developed a puff of black which is quite rythmic and the engine seems 2 cough almost :(
