Hi guys,

Took my 89 2.5 turbo 90 out for a run down the motorway and was running fine. Came of to turn round for home and changed down it cut out but started when put back in gear.Strange!. However on the home run was losing power not a lot but enough. By the time got off the motorway very sluggish and again cut out when changed down. gently got back home but in the drive it died and now... will offer to fire but nope will not catch.
Have replaced the fuel pump, fuel and at every point where there should be. changed the fuel filter. Even the old ether spray will not help.....its dead but trying. My mechanic mate [but not old diesels !] and i have run out of ideas
How can i check the injector pump or any other suggestions

Hello have you checked the fuel cut-off solenoid. An electrical valve type device that cuts the fuel to the injector pump which stops the engine when you turn the ignition of. No fuel no engine etc. It is located next to the injector pump nearest the bulkhead has a sindle wire to it. May be going faulty, poor electrical connections check circuit back to fuse through ignition barrel also. You can dismantle it take out the plunger so fuel flows through all the time if your landy starts and runs without plunger the only way to stop the engine then is to stall it. Then refit plunger. The next worst case could be the cylinder head gasket starting to fail. When this happens the engine loses compression and will not start. Diesel engines depend on compression in the cylinders to start and run. This happened on mine I thought all sorts were going wrong turned out to be the cylinder head gasket and a cracked cylinder head:(. Before you pull that to pieces see if you can check the compression on each cylinder. I was told the compression on each should be reasonably equal. The compression value is not too relevant provided all four cylinders are near the same.

Hi DuncP

The Landy is fitted with a immobliser which may have done away with the fuel solenoid as it appears to sit excatly where you are directing me to ! we are going to do a compression test tommorow oddly enough and we have considered getting rid of the imobliser just to rule it out . Thanks for the pointers and will let you know

the bit you are looking at is the fuel cut off solinoid, just put a 12volt feed to the terminal on it then try to start it.

they are a common non starting fault, no power to it or its broken
