So, i know everybody says to buy a landy with a 200tdi or a 300, but why? Other than 'they go forever'?

I have seen a 90 for sale with a 2.5TD. I am wondering what the downsides are to getting this and how easy/costly is it if i later wish to change it for a tdi.

Because old, worn and badly maintained 2.5td have a habit of expensive breakdowns. And they only make 85 horse, as opposed to about 110 for Tdi.

I have a 2.5TD 110 and it's mostly fine most of the time. The lack of grunt is only really noticed when heavily loaded and / or trying to make a quick(er) start from stationary.
The 200TDi will drop straight onto the existing engine mounts of a 2.5TD and gearbox. A 300Tdi would require a bit of extra work (cutting, welding, etc.) The later engines do give a bit more grunt and slightly better fuel economy. However the old 2.5TD will last a long time if looked after.

Depends what you are going to be using it for at the end of the day to some extent.

Mine is fine too, but it was good to start with, and is very well looked after.
The lack of power is an issue if you are towing, especially in hilly country. Also for people who want to do long distances on the road, quite slow and noisy. Fortunately I don't want to do that often.
I agree it is good to consider the uses to which the vehicle is put, high milers might find fuel economy an issue too.
 
I had a 2.5TD it was slow off the mark and was hammering fuel.. I cooked it on a pay and play day and put in a 200tdi myself over Xmas, Lots more power, easy enough to do and better in fuel.

I do miss the sound of the TD tho.
 
Yeh something like that, after i blew it up it sounded like a set of spanners in a washing machine but it still started... even tho it was rough as hell... a bit like the terminator.. it just wont die!!!
 
Can I jump is and ask how similar they (200tdi and td) sound on tickover?

I have driven a td many times, but the 200tdi I bought (and am slowly doing up) sounds remarkably similar - albeit I have only moved it around the yard!

I know they are based on the same block, but...?

Pretty similar, if they are well set up and tuned most of the sound you hear will be compression knock. Apart from strengthening with ladder frame, and a reworked head and injection system, the engines are pretty much the same.

Thanks very much for all the replies! I live far away from everywhere, so although i am not commuting, i will need to fork out a lot on fuel if i take it anywhere. Also, being slow off the mark could be frustrating. Perhaps i could get one with the plan to convert if the price is right.
