I have an ex-defender 2.5 petrol engine in my series 3 and am considering tuning it up a bit. In the technical section of this months LRO it says that the 2.5 petrol camshaft is 'tamer' than that fitted to the 2.25, can anyone elaborate on this. Does the 2.25 cam have a higher lift and therefore give a bit more power or should I simply buy an aftermarket 'warm' cam?
Also I want to raise the compression ratio from 8-1 to 9-1 and I've heard that this will require 1mm to be skimmed of the head, is this correct?
I am also considering gas-flowing the cylinder head and fitting a larger bore exhaust, the engine is already fitted with a new [correct] twin-choke weber carburetor. Any comments or ideas.

you knowyour going to be told to put a bigger engine in, Say bollocks and tune yours . let us know how you get on

actually its the 2.5 cam that has a slightly higher lift and is used to give the 2.25 a bit more pep, if your going to the trouble of skimming the head why not also get a 2.5turbo manifold with the turbo and have a little bit of fun wont add much power for low revs but it will make it a bit nicer to drive and i can fully recomend a SS exhaust it made my 2a bark with a freeflowing manifold have fun

Steve Parker do a larger bore exhaust
And these do various performance upgrades. (I have no idea if they are any good or not)

Thanks for replying, I don't think I'll go down the turbo route as I've never really been a fan of these, more to go wrong, insurance hassles and just how do I fit the carb to the turbo unit?
I won't be doing anything untill it's winter lay up anyway but hopefully by then I'll know what I want to do with it. Any more ideas or comments will be most welcome.

Depends how much you want from it and how much your goingto spend

As the head is off you may as well take the valves out give them a clean. Polish the inlet and exsaust ports a dremil works best for this and rebed in the valves. more air

A better air filter ie piper x, k&n or itg more air again
Ether a tuned or stainless exhaust with a tubular manifold. To improve exsaust flow

Then a the carburettor ethe buy a unrated one or clean and polish the one you got but ether way it would need to go to a rolling road to be tuned properly to get the air fule mix correct . But being a carb ran landy this will only have peek efficacy in one reve range.
