Hello everybody, well the s3 gearbox is in little bits in my garage. Should of just bought a new complete unit. Trying to get all the bits and pieces is a bit of a **** night mare. But now I have started it, it WILL GO BACK TOGETHER. Anyway does anybody know if the 2.5 petrol engine from a defender will go straight into a series 3 without any engine mounting issuesl like the problem with the diesel 2.5na right hand engine mount. I do not do many miles but wanted a stronger 5 bearing engine with a little more BHP to fit an ashcroft high ratio box to. Any thoughs welcome.

The 2.5 petrol fits exactly onto the existing series III mounts, assuming it's not a V8 chassis. I had one in mine, and it was a great engine. You need to fabricate an exhaust if you're going to use the existing 2.5 manifolds and carbs. THe standard 2.25 manifolds and carb will fit and will work, if you rig a cable throttle linkage. But the smaller carb does strangle the 2.5 engine a little and won't feel exactly right.

im about to attempt to fit a 2.5 n/a 110 engine in my series 3, and try and keep it 24volt, must admit im only slightly nervious about the massive can of worms im about to open up and spill all over my garage, considering Ive never attempted anything like this before and am a novice macanic at best....:confused:

I've got a 2.5 petrol in mine, after an unfortunate incident with muddy water killed the 2.25. It goes pretty much straight in - the mounts are the same, you will need to drill out the bellhousing holes slightly as the studs are slightly larger, the series fuel pump will bolt up to the side of the 2.5. I seem to remember you use a combination of 2.5 and 2.25 clutch bits. You will need to make a new exhaust downpipe, linkage to the carb, and wire up the solenoids on the carb to a 12v switched source (eg. coil). The starter solenoid will also need a feed. You will need to make something up for an air filter too, as the 2.5 carb inlet points the wrong way. I think that was it off the top of my head.

It's got noticeably more oomph than the 2.5, especially when you open up the second choke on the carb :)

sorry to butt in.. but does anyone kno if a 19j will bolt on to mounts and flywheel housing/bell housing?

cheers!
