Morning all, i'm looking at buying a 90 today fitted with an ex mod diesel non turbo lump, but i know nothing about these engines. My question is what are they like for off roading, do they have enough power?

ya kinda answered your own question there i am sure the MOD wouldn't of used them for so long if they was no good.

i drove many a 2.5n/a when i was serving over all kinds of terrain with no problems

I've got a 2.5 n/a 90 quite off road modded is just fine. No problems with the engine 12J lump. It's just not a speed machine due to the transfer and gearbox. They need an overdrive bolted on haha. Yeh as said no problems just listen to it tick over any clunking or rattles avoid as people rag them hard due to lack of power and does do them much good. Normal engine checks for normal cars check all fluids I.e coolant clutch everything or bring a guy who knows. Cheers good luck.

Ok thanks for the advice :) its not an ex MOD landy itself its just had the engine out of one fitted so its got a standard gearbox and transfer box fitted so im lead to believe so with a bit of luck it may not be that slow! Thanks again, will post what the outcome is.

What age defender and do you know what engine was in it before? Then can work out what gearbox and transf boxes you got. Normal N/a has lt 77 anf lr230R.
