2.5 na gearbox noisy

Firstly everyone this may just be normal !

I've been driving a v8 3.9 auto discovery one for the last three years and the rust has finally got to her . So after an mot failure and a repair estimate of about a grand if I'm lucky I've decided to park the old girl up for bits .

The plan was always to put the v8 in a 110 station wagon with the auto box potentially. I've been looking for a while and finally picked up a 92 110 sw 2.5 na with a really decent chassis and reasonble bulk head .

However when I bought it I the transfer box stick had broken free from the the box , one of the connector rods is broken . I can't see the other one to check it yet .

So it makes what I consider to be a lot of transmission noise (unless I'm spoilt by the disco) . It is maxed out at 65 and on light inclines losses speed and I have to drop to third eventually to maintain speed . The noise is proportion to road speed not Rpm .

So her comes the really daft question , could I have the diff lock in without knowing as the linkage is broken creating the noise at Speed ?

Stupid question number 2 . (I hardly dare ask ) if it was locked in low ratio what speed would I get in 5th. At the minute I'm changing up at about 45-50 ?

If you were doing 65 with the diff lock on it would be seriously loud, as in banging and falling to bits:D

Top speed in low range is probably 30 ish screaming it's nads off

And yes you've been spoilt, transmission noise, engine noise and road noise and probably no sound proofing = loud
 
It could slip into diff lock if the levers were not connecting and you would never know, you might want to have a closer look at that.
 
2.5 na is a reliable plodder, but fairly slow-going. Especially if you've come from a 3.9 v8!
Might be worth having a look at the lift pump if you're really losing power on small hills.
Transmission noise will be relatively loud compared to what you're used to. Although, it'd be worth checking props, UJs, all oil levels, bearings etc. Just to make sure there's nothing untoward going on!
 
No it's not ex mod , it was owned by a college from new and the only owners.

Il recheck the log book tiommorow but it seems pretty straight

This is whats on the v5 - its signed up as a 110 defender (no tdi markings) , also no side vent suggesting it ever had a 200/300 in it.

I gather these were special order only after 1990 , ill do some more digging just I case I've missed the owner history.

no idea what white fleet is?

Its was registered in Jan 92 to the person I bought it from which is a college , maybe the college has some military background ill check that out as I'm intrigued now.
 
2.5 n/a was still available to purchase. The 200tdi replaced the 19j ( diesel turbo ) only, whilst the 12j plodded along in the background. Whilst they were still available, it was unusual to have actually bought one for the UK market! Maybe they were that much cheaper?
