Ok thanks so when the locking pin is in it should be 0.9 does it matter what stroke or the cam lobes are facing at this point. Just as long as I started with the first one pointing up. This is how they look when I'm at 0.9mm

Technically no as long as you have 0.90 mm with lock pin in. But the picture you show is NOT TDC number one firing. The timing is 180 degrees out with the cam in that position. The engine is at TDC exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve has just closed and the inlet is about to open. So the piston has to go down and back up to TDC compression stroke. At TDC number one firing, the cam lobes should be flat across the top. In the picture the lobes are known as rocking. Turn engine clockwise until first cam lobe is vertical. Push DTI in and set 2 mm on the dial. Lock it up on the adaptor. Turn engine clockwise until DTI stops dropping. Then zero. Turn engine clockwise until cam lobes are aproaching flat across top and engage locking pin. You can wriggle engine very slightly around this point to locate pin. But do not turn any distance anticlockwise. With lock pin in engine now at TDC number one firing and DTI should read 0.90 mm

Hi thanks very much for your help. I'm still struggling to set the pump timing. Number one lobe vertical set dti around 2mm pre load, turn engine clock wise dti dial turns anti clockwise several times once it stops moving just before it begins to spin clockwise I zero it then carry on until locking pin is in place. Adjust fuel pump to 0.9 try and start it nothing. If I set the pump so the the elongated holes are about central it starts straight away. I just want to get it right.

Are you sure the lock pin is engaged and not hung up on one of the two CPS pips either side of TDC. With lock pin engaged the engine should not be able to be moved either way. If you cannot turn engine any further clockwise but it can be turned anticlockwise you are snagged on a CPS pip. One pip is 40 degrees BTDC other is 20 degrees ATDC. The lock pin MUST be in the hole in the flywheel with the cam lobes flat across the top, with the engine immovable in either direction for the engine to be at TDC number one firing. Then you should have or need to set pump to 0.90 lift on DTI.
