All,

I hope you can help.

Just rebuild my engine and it has been running very well - done about 1000 miles in it. However, recently I used it in the morning with everything normal then moved it out of the garage in the afternoon only to be greated with a kind of intermitent whistling noice. Like the exhaust was leaking on one cyclinder, pop pop pop. I subsequently drove it a few meters and it now only runs on two cyclinders. I have traced it to cylinders 1 and 2. Spark and plugs are ok on both cyclinders.
I am therefore suspecting that the head gasket has blown between cyclinders 1 and 2.
Does this sound plausable?
Cheers

thanks a lot - I will do. I did rasie the compression a bit by skimming the head. Do you think the gaskets could be now a weak spot?

Cheers

I am suspecting poor quality gasket - one of my biggest bug bears at the moment is the quality of parts. Don't know if you have had the same experience but it is a getting worse.
By the way, I have two types of head gasket in my stores. 1 is a Copper type the other is a black fibre type - which would you recommend? I have used both types on my spare engine with no obvious differences.
Again thanks for your input

its the same for us in the trade ,any non current vehicles ,a good number of parts are made in the east ,even what you would think were once reasonable names ,composite is normally my preferred but does it look good or a little cheap , id rather fit an old stock copper than new composite but new copper might not be any better , if they are both new pick the best made looking one

The one I have left is Bpart so I don't have much confidence. Are you aware of a source of old stock OEM LR gaskets? Much rather pay a bit more and get something decent without having take the head off every 5 mins.

Oh forgot to mention, there doesn't seem to be any water / oil contamination, but if the gasket has gone between the bores, you won't see any correct?

Thought I would give you some feedback. Sorry its been a while but I have been travelling for 2 weeks so only just got time to pull the head.

Yep - completely blown between 1 and 2 - a massive hole in the gasket. I'll try and get a photo. Went for the fibre one but I am not confident.
Now on the look out for a Series 1 bulk head if you know where there might be one.

Just thought I would add something. After changing thé gasket thé engine is now à bit tappety around 2000rpm. Its running smooth and pulls like à train. I didn't realise these engines went so well when in rude health. But thé tappets are annoying. Everything is set up right and its quiet at idle and higher in the rev range. Is this anything I should be worried about? Don't want anything to wear out early.

Cheers
