2.25 petrol 90 advise.

Howdy, just looking for a bit of advise on a 90 I'm looking on buying please men, I have done a search but never found much. It's a 1985 90 with a 2,25 petrol in it. The owner claims its well looked after and solid, has just had the timing chain replaced and the weber carb cleaned as well as a service - is there a common fault with timing chains on these? Is the weber carb on this engine a good combo? Are these engines generally quite reliable, and is there anything common to check on them? I realise they are crap on fuel but it's not a daily runner, just to pull Trials bikes about and some off roading, Being reliable is more important than fuel economy really. Only other thing is surface rust on the bulkhead. I have been assured that the chassis is solid an it's only surface rust, no welding required, Would simply painting this help or is the bulkead doomed? Is it worth putting more money in and getting a TDI unit or are these petrols actually ok? Sorry for all the questions fellas but any advise would be appreciated. Thanks
 
Just wait in there matey for a 200tdi. Look for rust in normal places bottom of doors, under floor mats, bulkhead any rust within 10 inches of brake servo is instant mot failure. Chassis give a good poke with screwdriver. Rear x member, 2.25 will be gutless if your towing.
 
The 2.25 is a reliable unit in good order[had one for 17 years on the road] not powerfull but a lot better than a 2.25 diesel.Timing chains very reliable,take someone who knows landys with you to check it out.
 
Cheers fellas. I'm still in 2 minds, really I want a 200tdi but wouldn't turn my nose up at a decent petrol, just don't want to buy one and end up shovelling money into it to get it right, and end up spending more than a TDI would have cost in the first place! I think the only way I'm going to win in this situation is to take my time and put a bit more money into a diesel, just wait for the right one. Thanks for the advise.
