I tried pushing them out from underneath while the head was off but the hotspots were in the way - have I needlessly sacrificed a screwdriver? :p
I think James is talking about the injector shrouds not the washers. I use a pencil to get the steel washers out, loosen them with a screwdriver if they are stuck in gook.

Great thread and piccies.

For reference, if you want to clean the rust out of the waterways, concentrated Hydrochloride acid removes it a treat. Seal all holes except 1 with duck tape, get some spirit of salt, dilute about 50% with water (acid in to water ALWAYS, and you probably only need a 1/2 pint of diluted mix) and slosh around in waterways for a few minutes. For cast iron, you really need to put some household bleach in afterwards, to neutralise the acid, as you could get some trapped in the pores.

At you own risk, PPE etc. Great for doing petrol tanks (clean with caustic soda solution first) and most other lightly rusted parts. Google "pickling steel" for more info.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a go next time I delve into the engine :D

Everything's back together and working now :D (touch wood!) Thanks for all the help!

Just need to give it a run to get the fluids moving then check the levels again.

The painted head looks great but is surrounded by manky old bits - lots more tidying and cleaning to do!

One thing I did notice when reading the manual is that the throttle linkage is missing - does this do anything other than link the hand throttle (which is also missing)?
