I want to get a Double Cab Defender. Question is, which one to go for.
I would want to get more torque/power (more for low down grunt than top end speed) - Which engine (2.2 2.4 or Td5) would be the best to go for to get the best results (torque more preferable)? I looked at a plug in Tuning Chip from chipexpress - is that the right sort of thing to do? I'm not considering doing masses of other upgrades at this stage (just ECU if it's enough). Help appreciated.

Puma eat gearboxes
Td5 not without issues but alive tuning or tuning box

tuning boxes are ok, but remap is better.
tunignboxes generally just up the fuel raill pressure, full remap will adjust all paramenters.

I think the power/torque gains from a remap are similar on these engines.

It would come down to which Land Rover you would rather have....the "traditional" TD5 Defender interior or the newer TDCi dashboard with improved heater and and loss of the air vents below the screen.

And whether you have any preference as regards engines.

Personally I don't like the Ford TDCi, having had them in Ford vans they are nothing like as nice as the TD5 and lack character. The injectors are "coded" to the engine and can lose their codes, they can and do fail as can the fuel pump.
The TD5 ones are designed to last 250,000 miles.

I'd go TD5 without any hesitation. The tdci is grand for pottering about but the TD5 sounds infinitely better (with just a decat and center box removed) and in my opinion feels like it has more grunt to drive once its been chipped obviously.

Remap, decat and larger intercooler really makes the TD5 come alive.

Ive just got a 2.4 Tdci, im looking to get it re mapped by IRB . so far so good. Has a dual mass flywheel rattle which ill get looked at soon.

I'm pretty sure that in the Defender, the 2.4 doesn't have a dual mass flywheel, only in some of the transits.
