As the title suggests, im looking at getting my first land rover and have always had my heart set on a defender. you guys will know a hell of a lot more than i do, so any input would be apreciated!

Is there any thing i should look for in particular? I kno, bulkhead and footwells etc. but what else should i be looking at?

Im tight as a Scot so my max budget is about £4000, not too sure weather i will get a half decent landy for this. but like i said above, you guys know what your talking about!!

Save your money buy a decent chassis-ed 19j (old turbo diesel) slam a 200 tdi in it.

otherwise 200tdi's rotten as pear go for good money

if you got the skills and the tools then fanatics advice is sound , if you are not then should get a fair fender for that sort of folding ;)

At a guess based on Ebay prices you should get a decent solid 200/300tdi for that if you don't mind the odd dent and scrape! Depends whether you're looking at buying privately or through a dealership. A good idea would be to get yourself a Haynes manual and a basic toolkit if you haven't got one already, as you're likely to need it at some point or another! Whatever you end up getting it's always a good idea to take someone knowledgable along with you, if not be sure to get underneath and give everything a good poke with a screwdriver to make sure there's no serious rot. If the sellers genuine he won't mind you doing this.

For example, £750 over your budget but bear in mind it's being sold from a dealer, so a private sale would quite possibly be under the £4k you've got. 1998 300tdi commercial http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1998-Land-Rov...5166336?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2a09ed3280

Same story with this 1999 TD5, again from a dealership hence the £4750 plus VAT, but privately you would expect to pay substantially less. Would need a good inspection though as it looks as though it may have been used for farm work so you need to be very careful.

or a 1997 300tdi up at £4250, but he says he'd take offers so I'd be inclined to offer 3.5 and perhaps go up to 3750.

Just a few that came up in a quick local ebay search, I'm sure if you hunt around you'll be able to find better deals than I've found in two minutes!

Thanks fella's, will be keeping my eyes open. the road tax for my car expires in november, so will (fingers crossed) have my defender by then. definately better to buy from a private seller then? will get my self a haynes manual, already have some tools, but no harm in adding to it because its a bit naked! if i ended up buying an older landy, do you think it would be worth dropping some power steering into it?
