19J engine

Recent thread,(last 3/4 days) where guy was asking for help identifiying engine, and it was a 19j, I got the impression it was for sale, maybe worth some searching?

I knew that my engine was bad but it is amazing the condition that these engines will continue to run in.

At least 0.025" clearance between piston and bore. The engine used to runaway if left idling. 1 and 4 cylinders soaked with oil....needs a rebore and new pistons.

Cylinder head has cracks everywhere and looks like it has dropped a valve in the past on number 3 given the peppering of the head surface......new head.

Big chips out of the brass tappet blocks.

Number 4 piston sits 3mm lower than the others at TDC.....bent conrod....new conrod and probably a crank grind.

Signs of head gasket staring to fail........block skim.

So, what to do......rebuild it with a new/used cylinder head. Go 200tdi and possibly have to rebuild that.

I wanted to try to keep it original, but the price of originality and ending up with the least desirable diesel engine is making me think twice.

If you can wait, bide your time and buy a 19j when one comes up. You sound like you know your way round an engine, you can strip it repair/rebuild it before fitting in your 90. Loads of 19j were taken out for an upgrade so they will be lurking in sheds still. A 90 with a 19j will become a rare beast one for the originality classic car brigade to collect.

I might see if I can find a short MOT Disco 200tdi so I can run it to assess the engine. Might also get the last emissions test results and as suggested store the 19J and may be take the opportunity to collect the bits that will be needed to overhaul it.
Thx for all of the suggestions.......I found the 19J on ebay but the guy had sold it.

The new chassis delivery is imminent so will have plenty to do.

You could 300tdi it with a Steve Parker kit, then it’s all unboltable to return to original. If I were upgrading that’s what I would do. Sounds like your current 19J will be a hefty repair but apart from the head the other bits should be cheap.

Bit expensive doing both but you would find the tdi more practical. I like originality personally so I rebuilt my 2.5na.

Spotted this on Facebook, bit of a distance...

Thx Huddy 84,
As you say, its a bit too far.
I have found a good LR cylinderhead so am going to rebuild the 19J.
Took the sump off today. The bent conrod will not go through the bore, so I am going to remove one of the bigend sides by drilling to weaken it and then hopefully breaking it off.

So I need a conrod, if anyone has one kicking about....there is 4 on ebay but I only need one.

The crank journals look and measure ok, so it looks like a rebore to plus 0.020".

Did you get a 'new' engine? If not there is one here:

be quick it ends today.

Thx for the heads up on this. Unfortunately I missed it.
I am going to rebuild my existing engine.
Rebore, crank grind.

I have managed to acquire a very good cylinderhead and a set of conrods.

If another engine does emerge I will get it.

Ok, if I see anymore I'll let you know.

Thx for this. I have decided to rebuild what I have got as I have collected all of the parts that I need. If, however, I come across something nasty then I will have to reconsider another engine.....
